Some users on twitter have complained about seeing old resources a the pages above -- Adobe reused the same links for LR2 and LR3 -- you may need flush your browser cache or force-reload the pages if you've visited them recently.

I have been playing around with beta 2 and it is great. In particular I love the new nose reduction algorithms they have implemented. I will be upgrading.

OK, downloaded and played for 30 mins - first impressions? - OUTSTANDING!

The noise reduction is great as is the sharpening and lens corrections. Well worth paying the upgrade - debit card is coming out the wallet later today after a bit more playing!

Seems a lot faster as well.

Holy crap!!

Quick update - not sure if this is in the previous version, but when applying sharpening you have a control called "Masking" - this allows you to just sharpen the edges etc. Hold down the ALT key when moving the slider to see where the sharpening effect will be applied.. AWESOMENESS!!

Update - the ALT key works on all sharpening functions - was this available before??

Update 2 - and exposure functions - I am guessing this was there before and I just never knew about it.

Hmmm... May have to upgrade. I was planning on getting software for noise reduction anyway and if this is as good as it looks I may just upgrade and not worry about more software for the noise. Anyone use it yet? How does it compare (the noise reduction) to say Neat Image or DeNoise?

Yeh, honestly if I have to choose between upgrading to Ps CS5 or Lr3, Lr 3 wins easily on paper. I haven't tried the public betas, but I do think I'll give the trial a go and most likely upgrade. Me wonders how it will run on my work laptop, a 3-year-old Dell Latitude D820

Simms / Alt key -- Yep, been there since v2, maybe even v1? That's the primary way many tutorials show how to use the sharpening sliders in LR. Try holding down Alt while using several other sliders and buttons -- you might be surprised. ;)

Another resource added to OP -- if you have a tech-crush on Julieanne Kost (like I do), you can be sure to enjoy a whole new set of 10 videos she just released for LR3. Most are pretty basic, but there's plenty of good stuff there... And, well, it's Julieanne Kost, of course... :D

I've been using LR3 B2 for some time now and it's brilliant... I knew the release was close and have been looking forward to and dreading it(lack of funds) lol. I'm thankful that the beta doesn't expire until the end of the month and then I can go trial if I need a bit more time to save up but I'll definitely be paying for the upgrade rather than going back to LR2.7. Will also be checking those videos out, thanks for the link Charles :).

With LR3 release and the current HDR challenge, here's a link for those that want to learn more and the workflow from HDR from Lightroom 3 to Photoshop CS5. Too bad it wasn't released a week ago ;)

I received an additional 30% discount on LR3 by upgrading to both CS5 and LR3 at the same time so I bought both. They're downloading as I type (1.1GB for CS5!) . Can't wait to try them! :)

I saw that - if it was 30% off the entire package I would rip their arms off trying to grab - but 30% off LR doesn`t seem a great deal to me.

Out of interest, how much is LR3 from the US Adobe store? They are charging us £232 (including VAT) - just wondered how much it is across the pond?

Whoo-hoo -- just got my serial # from Adobe (oodered upgrade last night) -- no more splash-screen on startup for me. ;)

If you ordered your upgrade last night or this morning, have no fear -- the Adobe serial # generators are running and cranking out the emails as fast as they can, I'm sure...

Just run a small gallery off and I am sure the output quality is a lot higher - granted they are only small images (800 px or so) but they look cleaner, brighter and sharper.

Or maybe thats just me wrapped up in all the excitement.

I may upload it later so you can have a nosey and tell me what you think.

On a different note - the lens correction facility - does that take into account the type of sensor you are using the lens with (full frame, 1.3 crop or 1.6 crop)? Or is it just a catch-all for that particular lens?

OK, found a bit of a niggle with it. Its probably not a bug but definitely something that could be improved.

If copying the settings of an image, and I have lens correction enabled - it copies that exact lens config to the next image - but say I shot image #1 with the 50mm 1.4, then the next image with the 85mm 1.2 it will apply the corrections of the 50mm to the second image - it would be great if it detected the lens being used on each image and changed it accordingly.. but it doesnt...

It seems to make them smaller!! Mine went from 560mb to 430mb. I also think that using the new rendering engine make the image incompatible with LR2 cats.

It makes it smaller as

Simms pointed out. It also gives you the option (on first run) of creating a fresh catalogue or to rebuild the current one.

Better solution, I think -- check out the bomb-diggity tool Adobe Lens Profile Creator -- create your own lens correction profiles and let LR do your lens corrections pseudo-automagically.

You can see what profiles (camera body lens combinations) already exist by browsing under the CameraRaw/LensProfiles/1.0/[camera vendor name] directory. (The location of that directory depends on your OS -- the "LensProfiles" directory should exist alongside where you have your camera profiles installed, in the cooresponding "CameraProfiles" directory. If you have trouble finding it, look for files ending with ".lcp").

I'm downloading it now, as none of my body+lens combinations are provided yet.

Just like upgrading from LR 1 to LR 2, the catalog format has changed. As mentioned above, the LR 3 catalog may actually take up a little less room on your HD. When you first attempt to open an LR 2 (or even LR 1) catalog, LR 3 will prompt you to upgrade the catalog. This will create a *new* file -- the existing LR1/2 catalog will be left in place -- and you'll be prompted for where to save the new catalog file. You can happily place the LR3 catalog(s) alongside your existing LR1/2 catalog(s).

Installing LR3 will leave your existing LR1/2 installation intact also -- so you can still go back and load those LR1/2 catalogs with LR1/2 as well (obviously, changes you made in LR3 will not be visible[*]).

* - Exceptions apply to saving xmp, writing dev changes to dng, saving dev settings in exif, etc, etc, etc...

I've just purchased it along with the CS5 upgrade for the 30% off, and installed.

Please don't tell me they've removed "Custom" sort order in grid view.

Please.

Edit: There it is. Under "Collections", there's a "Sorted" collection, with "User Order" as the sort order in the lower tools bar. That's new, and heart-stopping. Could have been a little clearer.
