We've been watching all the action down here in South Louisiana for weeks now.

Check out these cams. You can see just how much oil is flowing now that they cut the pipe. They are in the process of capping it now.

Oil

I think camera 10 is the acutal action going on right now.

This makes me sick to my stomach. The gulf is my home(I dont live there now but was born and raised and plan on returning very shortly to the PCola to live :) and all this oil just flowing freely... it kills me.

I hear ya...I've been through it all...hurricanes...etc...however, we need the oil industry here. People don't realize how many jobs this industry produces for La.

The company I work for (a fortune 500 company) does all business to business...with lots being oil related. If the oil wells are shut down...I'm done. My wife works for an oilfield supplier...if they shut down the drilling, me, my wife, kids, dogs, camera, flashes....milk, bread, house note....all done !

Find out what happened...punish the guilty...pay the people direclty affected...and move on...but right now...just stop the leak.

Its ironic if you think about it. The oil is a natural product, one made by time and of the earth itself. Its funny how harmful it is and the effects it will have.

I understand. Truly I do. I was born/raised in Sarasota, FL right on the coast... been thru it all as well. Cant punish the people for a big companies mistake. But they need to get it taken care of ASAP. As it is fish, shrimp, crawdads, etc are going to be thru the roof. LA does depend highly on the oil business, so does TX. Id hate to see it shut down. I just wanna see it fixed! We can put a man on the moon cant we fix a leak!!! LOL

Right now there is a stop on all new drilling. If the president doesn't lift it, the rigs that are out there under lease will have to move. They cost millions per day in "rent". They can't sit for long. Brazil is already in line to sweep up as many as it can...and get this....

....any country that can afford the lease can get the drill to create wells and extract oil....IN THE GULF OF MEXICO !!! So the only ones you will hurt by the U.S. ban is US.

OMG you are kidding me!! That is absolutely INSANE!

I remember the discussion during the Presidential election about allowing drilling being closer to shore. "Drill baby drill". From what I understand this rig was far enough out under the old standards. I also remember that even well functioning rigs leak a bit and tar balls weren't uncommon to find along the gulf coast. I guess I have a few problems with this situation.

One is all the people who think this is easy to fix. Blowouts that happen on land are hard enough to deal with. This is 5000 ft down. (That is almost a mile down!)

Secondly is all the people that think the Obama administration should be "doing something". That would be like asking BP to take care of health care. The experts are working on this. Honest.

Thirdly - I am keep hearing about how BP is trying to spin so many aspects of this. The detergents they are using to try to break the oil down are actually causing the oil to be suspended beneath the surface. BP's response? No its not. (flat out denial in the face of scientific proof). Cleanup workers are complaining about dizziness and nausea and if they want protective masks a) they have to provide their own b) they can't use them without training. BP suggested that the dizziness and nausea were from food poisoning. I mean honestly: they are under the friggin' microscope. Why the hell are they trying to hide stuff? It just makes them look even worse when these things come out.

Lastly - Why didn't any one just ask the simple question: What if? All the experts agree that drilling at that depth was uncharted territory.

One thing I will say though. I always thought that the drilling and oil exploitation that happens in Canada and here in Alberta in particular was completely safe for the environment. I am pretty sure that's the case most the time but those tar sands up in Ft McMurray for instance have a lot of people wondering.

I do not believe this is correct. The Administration extended the moratorium on new deep water drilling only. Existing drilling and drilling is shallow water is still going on.

Nope..yesterday drilling was suspended in shallow also.

Well then Obama does not know what he is talking about. This from an interview today (televised tonight on Larry King Live):

Asked about reports that his administration had extended a moratorium on offshore drilling to shallow water rigs, Obama denied it.

"Actually the moratorium is not extended to the shallow waters," the president said.

I thought I heard that the ban on shallow water was LIFTED yesterday...

I'm near the action here...and have read extensively on this subject.

I won't go into all of your points but:

Most drilling is done in deep water now (far from the coast) because of environmental concerns with the "small leaks" that happen all the time. If this type of disaster would have happened in 300 feet of water, the first method to stop it...(the big 4 story high dome) would have worked. It didn't work because of the frigid temps on 5000 feet of water.

On the "sickness". There were 7 people airlifted to a hospital. They all were on the same boat along with dozens of other boats in the area. They became sick (flu-like symptoms). They went to the hospital and were out...some in less than 24 hours. No-one else had be hospitalized out of the 1500 - 3000 paid "volunteers" that are working on the job.

As far as drill baby drill...this state depends on drilling...tourist yes...seafood yes...but lose drilling and it is over baby. Much of the nation's gas and oil is pumped from Louisiana wells.

On another note...someone wrote into the paper this morning. They said we need to stop using cars. Said we need to use streetcars and build other electric trains and monorails. The writer said that this can all be done without the need for drilling. One thing she didn't know - Most of the south gets their electricty from burning natural gas. In the north it is coal...here it is gas....oh well...

The Obama doesn't know what he is talking about...all drilling is stopped at this point.

EDIT: Let me look around down here on the LA Gov. page...I may be wrong..they may have re-evaluated the shallow drilling and started it back up.

About time this country stops drilling for oil and starts pursuing alternative environmentally friendly and sustainable energy sources.

Yes I just saw this also...and it is on local talk radio now. This however, is pretty much a stop. Lots of hoops to jump through in order to fire these back up. Likely weeks...that's a long time for a 1.5 million dollar a day rig to sit idle.

Is there any alternative energy that will put a dent...say 25% in the oil we use?

I think the oil industry that makes tens of billions of dollars profit per quarter can afford it.
06/03/2010 11:41:06 PM · #20
That doesn't matter. The oil companies will not pay 1.5 mil a day to lease an idle rig (they usually don't own the rigs). For example, the one that exploded was owned by Transocean. This in turn means that if drilling is halted, the rig isn't doing them any good. The rig owners (if not being paid), move the rig on to the next company in line. In this case, many of the idle rigs are being pursued by Brazi.

That's still less time than we've been watching the current disaster unfold, and a repeat should be unthinkable. The same thing happens after every catastrophic technical failure (space shuttles, aircraft, etc.): you stop and make sure the safety equipment is working. It's a common sense measure.

If the criteria for developing a new technology, which will eliminate the need for a preexisting technology, is that it is able to fulfill 25% of the load before being developed is the stance you're going to take...
You do realize that's a preposterous approach, right?

Not that I have heard. It is easy to say let's change away from fossil fuels but there needs to be something to replace it with. First you need a better fuel to replace it with then you need a plan to phase it in, to just stop producing oil when you do not have a plan or alternative fuel is not the answer.
06/03/2010 11:47:04 PM · #24
Yes...it would be nice to have sweet green energy that supplied all of our power...that also put people to work. IMO we won't get off of oil until it runs out.

Brazil wouldn't be allowed to drill in U.S. waters either, and the cost of moving a drilling rig is also millions of dollars a day.
