Same bug with a few different views. Found him on one of the plants in the yard while I was cooking burgers on the grill. I never could get him where I wanted him for light and background though. Hopefully he will hang around and will make an appearance with a better photo later in the month.

Just a quick question on macro lenses, does anyone use the canon extenders 1.4x or 2x? also will they work with a canon 100mm 2.8 macro lens? Is this the best way to get a more magnified macro shot? please post any shots you have taken where you have used an extender on macro. well thats 3 questions but thanks in advance.

I use the 1.4 with mine.......however you have to use an extension tube with the canon version of the TC. Third party extenders may not require this.

Every one of these with this combination

Thanks Matt, Why do you have to use the extension tube is this because the 100mm won't fit onto the 1.4tc by itself? also what does tc mean? sorry for the stupid questions.

The canon version of the 1.4TC(teleconverter) the front element sticks way into the back of the lens attaching to it. It won't physically fit inside the 100MM lens or many other canon lenses. Some third party teleconverters like Sigmas don't do this and might work with the 100MM lens.

Check eBay cameras for "Vivitar 2X Macro" and there is a page of 2X macro focusing tele extneders.
I use one of those in Nikon mount, and it works as a 2X TC and allows me to focus macro to infinity with any of the manual lenses in my bag, as well as the D series auto Nikon lenses. It's a manual only gadget, but most of my lenses are manual. It has a focus ring which allows you to focus very close with any manual lens that will fit your camera. I'm sure that the Canon users would have to have at least one adapter, but I believe that the Pentax users can use it directly with their older K mount lenses. Here's a link to the Minolta model.

It was raining when I had time to play with my camera today, so here is one from a few weeks ago. Details are with the image.

Never thought of putting my extender on my macro. I have a 2x Kenko and I just tried it. It does increase my magnification but I lose auto focus. Will have to remember to use it now that I know it works. Will have to see about trying out a 1.6 and 1.4 to see if I can keep auto focus.

Thanks, had a look at them, a cheaper option to try.

It depends on what I'm shooting, but if it's something like a dragonfly, a tripod hampers mobility.
However, today I read in POP Photo magazine about shooting wildflowers (good thing I haven't taken it back to the library although it's overdue). One suggestion is to reverse the centre pole on the tripod to a very low viewpoint, with the camera upside-down. So I tried it ... it would be really great to have a camera with a swivelling view screen. ;-)

Also, I usually always use manual focus.

Hey Dave, this was taken with a EF 25 II Canon extension tube on a Canon 100mm USM 2.8 macro lens. Yes it does help with the magnification but it also makes it more difficult to focus if there is any movement or wind. '.....Just playing around with a bit of Xero Cubism for fun. Camera hand held about 100mm (4") away from spider, f/4.5 to create very shallow DOF. Cubism over entire image then mask out spider. This effect also works very well on spider webs with droplets in the early morning sun.

Not the sharpest shot I've ever taken. It's a cool looking little Fly though. Roughly the size of the eraser at the end of a pencil.
