I rencently acquired a new CAnon 1D MK4 camera and I was reading that it takes UDMA cards in addition to regular CF cards.

Since I will be shooting wildlife and sports with this camera, does it really make a difference to have a UDMA card vs a regular CF card when it comes to shooting wildlife?

I read that for Video is better to have UDMA, but I dont plan on doing any of that on my trip.

Any input is appreciated. The UDMA 16GB is about $100 compared to the regular CF that runs anywhere between $35-60

I use a 4gb UDMA card that's almost a year and a half old now. They're very fast compared to anything I've used before. If you're shooting RAW at 8fps you'll notice a big difference between a UDMA and a regular card. If you only shoot a frame off once in a while then your regular card will do and I see no reason to use a UDMA if only for the faster upload speed to your laptop/PC. At 16gb this may be of interest to you though.

Can't help with the UDMA question, but am drooling over the Mk4. Congrats.

Your 5DII supports UDMA, too.

Found this article that may be of interest.

This is an old article and does not cover the 1D Mk IV but has some info about UDMA itself.

The only time it really matters is if you shoot in burst mode. You can typically get more frames/sec with the UDMA.

I use them in my 5DmkII for shooting video as I've had problems with SanDisk Extreme III cards locking up the camera. With UDMA cards there is no problem.

dang, its tough wanting to spend 100 per card when I know I will be using at least 3-4 a day :(

The reason I got the 1D MK4 was to shoot burst mode, but I guess I better get a couple of cards for it too.

You spent $4,000 on the camera and your'e sweating a $100 memory card?

interestingly the last couple of Sandisk Extreme IV 8GB cards I got from Amazon were listed and priced as standard - but were actually UDMA when delivered.

And I bought them a few months apart.
