Love6, I am so sorry about your sexual assault.

A similar incident happened to me, back in the early 80s. I wasn't sexually assaulted, but one minute I was walking across a field near my home. My instincts told me to look back. I got grabbed by some carnie who held a hunting knife to my throat. I got away unharmed.

However as I did escape physical harm, apparently the cops didn't see any point in putting any kind of effort into catching the creep. And of course they blamed ME for the incident, because I was walking home alone, I was walking slowly, and oh yeah I was wearing shorts and a T-shirt.

Never mind that I had the figure of a stick person, was wearing shorts cause it was the middle of the afternoon in full daylight, 34 degrees out (this took place in late August) and as the bitch who was supposed to drive me home from my riding lesson found it more convenient to drop me off closer to her place than mine, I didn't have bus fare, I had to walk home. And I was walking slowly cause I was already tired from the riding lesson, and having to walk a couple of extra miles in hot humid weather didn't help. All my fault. Or so they told me.

So from that day on I have never had any faith in that police force. I learned to listen to my instincts, and act on them. Always!

Perhaps, but certainly that's an open invitation to use a non-DPC member. If we put their username in the title it would be real easy to check if somebody actually wanted to verify. Not that I would spend the time actually doing it to all of them, but if I see a photo of a baby or very young child, I'm going to verify if it's a user.

If I have time to shoot for this challenge I plan to leave it out and put it in the details ... my boyfriend created an account years ago and added me as his favorite photographer ... he hasn't really participated on the site, so if I use his username for the title, and someone looks it up ... they'll see that the image is probably mine, which negates my anonymity ...

whats his voting average and who is his statistically favourite photograper? ;)

That's a great question ... went and looked it up ... he hasn't cast any votes ... never did anything with his account!

As a woman I understand your concern. But you take calculated risks every moment of the day. No different from every time you get in your car and drive somewhere. You can be the best driver out, but it only takes a random knothead shooting a red light or passing to closely to ruin your life.

Every time I get on the back of horse, whether it is one I know well or not, I am taking the risk that I could end up making a flying dismount. So before I get on I suss out the horse as best I can. I wear proper riding gear - helmet, chaps, riding boots and yes crash vest, more often than not. Even so that didn't stop one horse I was riding from taking a bad step, going down like the Titanic, and catapulting me clear out of the tack. I ended up with a broken collarbone.

Last year I had Quigley come and stay with me as a houseguest for three days. I had never met him in person before or outside of dpc. We had a wonderful time, got lots of great photos, and set the basis for a friendship.

And almost a year ago, I saw a local photographer's work online, told him about dpc and after corresponding for about a month or so, we finally met up for a shoot. That was Ryan, aka Magnumphotography.

And had I not been peeking over the shoulder of a complete stranger at the local library almost 5 years ago, I never would have learned about dpc or met RayEthier.

So, you exercise caution. Listen to your instincts. Meet and shoot in a public place. Look at their portfolios and see what they like to shoot, read their posts on forum threads. Sadly you can't be completely trusting, but you don't want to have one hand on the camera and the other on a can of Mace!

Dpc member is not a perfect stranger

by the way - if its any consolation; I walked home in broad-daylight from highschool and was grabbed by a complete stranger and sexually assaulted; so i'm not unfamiliar with the dangers of day to day getting out of bed... my point is in taking such 'risks' people should really be aware of what they are risking; and perhaps actually have a friend with them for safety-sake etc...

then again i could be wrong - and the thousands of dpc members could all be free of criminal charges on their backgrounds/etc and no one could ever have a horrible thought towards another person... or turn out to be a crazy stalker etc...

back on topic i guess- how many people are signing up their infants for membership so they can take "oOooo ahhhhh" kinda shots? :-D

Of course one should take this into consideration, just as one would when meeting a stranger in church or in a bar.

The fact that you met someone on line does not make them any more dangerous than if you met that same stranger in the company of your cousin Gertrude.

Ray

..well the craigs-list killer is still fresh in my mind from the whole internet business of meeting people from online...

...as for cousin Gerdy... i'm sure if i did introduce me to someone who is a stranger to -me- she'd probably only introduce me to someone she has known for like 40 years and met in nursery school that i'd probably have no interest in meeting... because they'd want to discuss things like their bowl-movements and what medications they are curently on ;) :-D

and even still there is the flip knife i carry on my person at all times for self-defense ;) and tho this topic is digressed now - to a 3 person meeting(not the point i make of = i'm thinking more along the lines of the 1 on 1 meetings ppl sometimes have; ie: not bringing a friend/cousin/family etc- along with them for their own safety ;)

...hmm... oh-yea wait...isnt wireless remote useful so you can have your hand on a can of mace? :-D

Wouldn't quite be the same membership drive for DPC if everyone was able to use a pre-existing member for the shoot !

SC will have a field day picking out the friend voters on this one.

I'm wondering how many people will actually take the time to lookup usernames. If I shoot something I'll probably use their username, just in case somebody is itching to hand out DNMC votes.

Would be good to see the SC enforce some rule such as "must of been a member for at least 1 month prior to challenge being announced".

Why?

So people don't just get someone to sign up so they can shoot them for the challenge. There are plenty of ways to skirt the spirit of the challenge for this one and not be DQ'd. Same as it is for lots of other challenges with unverifiable topics. Should make for some interesting post-challenge drama. :-)

So are you saying that I am cheating just because Ingrid coincidentally decided to sign up to be a DPC member today and I will be submitting a portrait of her? I can ensure you that the prepaid-by-me membership had nothing to do with this particular challenge. :p

And it can work out well, cause in addition to shooting for challenges (either together or independently) you have company on shoots, someone to learn from, a possible model and/or stand-in for you if you're shooting a self-portrait, someone to help you choose entries, someone to go shooting with just for fun, and most importantly... someone to bitch about dpc with! ;-)

My advice to Love6: pack pepper spray. Especially if meeting up with nshapiro, he shoots things he's not comfortable with!

...and gets ribbons for doing so!
