For anyone with experience with the Sony DSC-F828:
I recently purchased my first decent digital camera, a Sony DSC-F828. I was trying to figure out how to actually use the spot metering feature, and the manual is seriously lacking in an explanation. I asked Sony directly, and they simply referred me to the manual. I would have expected it to work something like how the spot focus feature works, by moving the spot around the image with the joystick "multi-selector". I can't get it to work this way, however.
Do you have to actually move the camera to position the center of the image (the "spot") on the desired exposure point, press AE Lock, and then recompose the image? If that's the case, then what's the difference between "centered metering" and "spot metering"?

I have a F828 also. I haven't figured out another way to do it other than recomposing the image. But then again, I'm new to photography and the manual (like you said) wasn't much help. I love the camera though and can't wait to see some pics from you.
I just signed up today, so I haven't put anything up yet. Just checking the site out and deciding whether I want to subscribe or not. Seems like a really nice site with a good strong community. :-) |

I don't know how it is in the F828, but in my F717 you do indeed have to recompose after pressing AE lock. The difference with "centered metering" is that it measures a larger area around the center, while "spot metering" gives you a metering of a quite small spot in the center. |

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of, only because it's a bit of a pain to do that on a tripod.

Yup--the "spot" in spot metering is locked in the center of the frame. If what you want to meter on is elsewhere, you have to place it in the center, hit the exposure lock, then reframe.
One of the few oddities in an otherwise supurb-handling camera. |

dont hit exposure lock, i find it easier to put it to manual on the settings that the camera reads for a proper exposure after the metering. this way u can take more than one shot without having to re-meter.

'Urro.
I've got a friend who has an 828, and after much playing around we decided that re-composition was the only way to get it to work.
What really amazed me was the variable quality of the manual for the 828, it's a great camera and aimed at users who will want to get every last bit out of the camera, ie: will read the manual cover to cover.

:-).. I downloaded the PDF for my G5 while I waited for it to arrive from the supplier, read half of it before it arrived. |
