The Sandwich Method never fails!
Say something positive, give advice for improvement, say something positive.

Sometimes you will have lots of positives to say and little negative....sometimes you will have barely any positive, and a ton of negative, but the structure really ensures that most people do not feel attacked.
It works well with criticizing/helping little children, and I think it works well with criticizing/helping grouchy photographers ;-)

Example 1: (of a hypothetical score of 7)
The composition and colors in this shot are lovely! The depth of focus is perfect, and I really like what you did with the lime inside of that coconut.
One thing I noticed though, is that the left corner of this image there are several distracting spots of dirt. Since this is not a basic challenge, you could have spot edited those out. It would really strengthen this shot in my opinion.
Overall, I really love your picture. You met the challenge theme "Coconuts" well and it is a crisp clean image.

Example 2: (of a hypothetical score of 2)
This image clearly meets the challenge theme. The coconuts are clearly the main subject of this photo and the viewer is not distracted away from them.
However, there are several things in this image that need a bit of work. The image is pretty blurry and overexposed, which really brings down the quality of this image. Perhaps if you had used a faster shutter speed you would have been able to properly expose the image and it might have been less blurry.
Holding up two coconuts to your chest might also be seen as bad taste by many voters, and this will also effect your score.
Overall, you have the right idea with composition in this image, and I feel confident that when you master the technicals of your camera a little more that you will be producing some lovely photos.

((Disclaimer: These are made up comments and made up challenge))

And to get back on topic...

My score finally made it up to a 5. I of course wish this was doing better, but since this has been in the 4s all challenge, I am quite happy.

Score dropping like a rock in the last 24 hours - what's up with that? :-(

I'm voting, and I'm considering giving feedback. I'm scoring pretty average to low though. Nothing above a 7 yet. It's a pretty disappointing effort, IMO.

I don't know that the concept was really understood by the majority here.

When I can figure out how best to give feedback that doesn't come across too destructive, I'll get on it.

I don't know if it's coincidence, but since the influx of people wanting to take part in the DPL my score has shot upwards:

LOL!

I'm not sure that taunting them is going to have the desired effect. I think there's a big component of fear these days- fear of a hostile reaction to a negative comment.

There are always people who have different criteria. You will get some of those. It is frustrating, but you will not get any explanation from the people that leave such votes. I got one of those just a few minutes ago on an entry that is in the mid-5's.

I just got a really low vote as well, don't know if it was a 1 or not, but it was enough to make my shot drop by about .05 in 1 vote.

would you expect to have any comments at his point in the voting?

Or is commenting something people do towards the end of voting?

A reasonable question, and one that gets asked all the time. Comments are harder to come by when your image is doing poorly. They are even harder to come by when your image is performing mediocre. The closer it is to a 5.00, the fewer the comments seem to be. A few common reasons are:
-It is easy to find something to say when you like it.
-There are some member who do not like to leave negative comments, so they just leave their vote and press on.
-Some members feel you have already wasted too much of their time by entering "rubbish" and they will not waste any more commenting on something that does not grab their attention.
-Though less frequent, it is still easy to leave feedback on a very poor shot with obvious, easy to identify flaws.
-Leaving feedback on a shot that does not wow you, but is not bad either takes a lot of time and effort. It is not easy to pick out why it fails to wow you, but there are not glaring flaws either. Commenting on these midrange votes is also one of the best ways to improve your own photography. By making yourself analyze why you do or do not like an entry, you will identify things that can improve your own photography and find what you like.

You can also post in the forums after the challenge if you need more feedback and you will usually get a handful of helpful responses.

Comments come throughout the challenge. More probably come toward the end because people have their voting out of the way. But you may not get any comments during a challenge. After the challenge has ended post it in a new thread and ask others to comment. You'll get more responses and good tips on how to improve.

as I mentioned earlier I am still new here so please excuse dumb questions :)

I am currently on an avg of 4.0991 for this challenge

no dramas about that, people don't like my image (using the spreadsheet HawkeyeLonewolf provided getting some ones and twos and threes at times)

however, I have 0 comments.

Went to bed with a satisfying 6.56, woke up to a 6.3. Still above my expectations, but somehow depressing :(

I got one also. Always have to wonder why they feel it deserves it. Really though, I think very little thought is involved.

just curious (I am new here :)), how do you tell?

do you monitor the vote count and average score constantly and do the sums?

or is there a facility to see the vote spread I haven't found yet?

LOL!! As long as you aren't wearing white shoes before Memorial Day. That would be inexcusable.

We say it's ok to wear white after Easter. So you're all good. :P
