A negative reaction to your artwork is still a reaction elicited.

- I've had a few comments that tell me my post was 'too-much-blue.' That's cool, you still took the time to tell me, therefore I've affected you and now I've known I've done my job as an artist!

DPC I wish I could KISS you right now!

So true.. A strongly negative reaction is far better than a non-reaction..

I concur.

I wish there was an option you could put on entires that would tell commenters to give an honest critique. That way the people that have a strong reaction to the entry can leave a meaningful comment without fear of a negative/accusatory PM.

I've also voiced that suggestion. It would benefit the people that desire feedback, and the heavy commenters would not waste the effort on the folks that don't really want it. Maybe it's on Langdon's "Things to do" list.

Umm.......doesn't the Critique Club checkbox on every entry fill that description?

Not in my opinion. Yes, it gets you a single honest critique, after the challenge. What it does not do is to encourage people to leave comments during the challenge. We have many people on the site who do not comment, or only comment when they have something positive to say. They have been turned off from it by the receipt of offended and often nasty PM's from the crowd that does not want feedback. I think it would encourage in-challenge commenting to know where it is desired and which entries should just get only a vote.

The checkbox I'm thinking of could sit right next to the critique club box, but instead of lining the image up ina queue, it would put a line under the entry saying "Feedback welcomed" or something like that.

Critique Club comments are usually quite fluffy and non-confrontational (i.e. politically correct).

Comments are more valuable when the person commenting knows you, your goals/intent, style etc. whereas blind critiques are pretty silly without any back story or information.

Imagine doing a blind critique of a Picasso and leaving a comment that said "too-much-blue" during the most inspired height of his Blue Period...lololol.

yeah, you know, to do such things I guess would merely be adding code to a document, not that difficult for someone who knows what they're doing (not myself). It just takes the concurrence to do so. I say we need to encourage the powers that be to do such things.

I myself am not a prolific commenter, sometimes I vent frustrations on the forum but it would be cool if it could be directed toward photos themselves. Have a 'serious comment' section and then a 'facebook-like' comment section at the bottom to where BS comments could be made (and deleted if necessarily deemed by the member).

Which may be an option solely available to paying members.... which I am currently not. (HINT HINT DPC council - $$)

Very similar to what I was thinking. While I appreciate every comment I get (I know, I know I have to stop being lazy and make more myself...), I would love to hear people's gut reaction to my entries. I think more information like this would cause people to focus more on the artistic intent of their entries in addition to the technical emphasis put on the entries normally.

I'm glad I posted this, it has inspired me to actually give some serious insight to entrants, for better or worse, I'm not holding back. But I'm not just offering poor or tasteful comments, I'm giving constructive criticism, which I feel there is a lack of here on DPC, I think it is that that needs to be accentuated here.

I would like to see this as well.

If something like this were to be put into effect, I'd suggest that some choices similar to these (from a writing site) go on the photographer's Preferences page, with the appropriate description automatically showing up under the photo title.

Well join up and leave some non-fluffy confrontational critiques

Bold added for emphasis...should be by now; it's been knocked around enough times (rightfully so).

I'll throw in another thought. On the images where you're liking what you see, try to leave a comment about what it is about that image that appeals, then the positive comments become just as useful as the constructively negative ones.
