hey guys,
just started using lightroom, was wondering do people prefer to create one new catalog for every "roll" you shoot, or do you just have one master lightroom catalog that you import everything into? some other division? pros/cons?
cheers!

I initially had several catalogues but it got complicated to manage them and I think Lightroom1 screwed them up so I stopped using more than one. I now have one catalogue and everything is in it. I use Smart Collections instead. There's a whole lot you can do with smart collections. I have 25 collections at the moment. Here are a few examples. A five star collection as well as 4, 3, 2 and 1 star, a flagged one, year, ISO, aspect ratio like square, landscape, portrait, exposure times, tiffs, jpegs, raws, just to name a few.

I have one catalog for all my own stuff and if I shoot a wedding or any other event that isn't personal stuff I have a separate catalog for each job. It makes it easier to back up a wedding/event and keep things straight when it is separate from all my photos. My personal catalog is about 38,000 pictures right now, i'm sort of a pack rat.

hmm makes sense. i've been making catalogs for rolls, and its getting cumbersome quickly. smart folders sounds like a good idea, plus separate catalogs for "special" shoots. thanks!

Does anyone know the answer for this?: When I connect my camera or memory stick to the computer the images are loaded into lightroom. I use Lightroom mainly for archiving and some cropping tools. Then when I want more then standard PP I export them to a "workmap" on my computer and open them in PS. When I'm done I rename the picture. Then if I want to re-open them in Lightroom it does not work because the extention has changed?!? Now I export the files again to my memory stick. Take it out of the computer and put it back in. Then I can import it again...
I'm very convinced that there is an easyer way.... anyone??
