To be honest, I wouldn't attempt most of what I shoot if I didn't have my DSLR. I'd get discouraged 'cause I do think my camera plays a big part in what I'm capable of producing.

Wendy, I wouldn't even TRY anything like those wonderful shots of yours! This would just be about getting the best picture you can with a very cheap camera. :-)

I'm not ready to do this yet anyway. I keep getting involved in work and PTO things and it's just sucking my life away right now. At least my antibiotics are working now lol.

Maybe March? That gives me time to find a good deal on a CHEEEEEP camera :)

Nothing too serious, just a cream I have to use on my face right now and it makes it VERY red - too red to go out in public! March sound good - I'll start looking for a cheeeeeeep camera too ASPA! ;-)

Ok, time to play devil's advocate.

It's the camera.

canon 40D with 100-400L series lens. Couldn't have gotten the shot without it.

canon 40D with 100mm macro lens. Couldn't have gotten the shot without the rapid advance. There's a huge amount of timing in the shot, but I'm also depending on the 6 frames/second.

Couldn't have done these with a point and shoot.

I'm thinking of getting a 3mp child's camera anyway, especially if I can get a discontinued one for between $20 and $30. It would be fun to have a side challenge with those. I'm stuck in the house for 2-3 more weeks Michelle, so give me a chance to get one before starting a side challenge pleeeeeeeeeease! ;-)

Has Woot had any go on sale yet today? Not that it matters if one does go up. I can never seem to connect to their site when I want something.

lol... uh... i was thinking the same thing. Except I was looking in the $20 range. hehe

This is why I wanted help defining CHEAP! :)

Plus, can you imagine, pulling out one of those kiddie cameras in front of the people that I mentioned in my first post? hehehe fun!

Hey, that works too, and would be different form last years P&S side challenge. Think "digital Holga". Woot regulary has cheapie kids cameras for next to nothing. Speaking of which, there's a Wootoff going on right now.

From an idea from another thread, my new response to the question of what kind of camera do you use is gonna be "Seitz 6X17 Digital"

Does DPC have that in the DPC camera listings yet? I see that they were at Photokina in 06 with those beasts.

I wonder if they would be a little much for the cheap P&S side challenge?

It's a great little point and shoot, I take it with me everywhere I go...:)

Well, we had a hard time defining it for last years P&S side challenge. We had everything from consumer grade snapshot cams to high end compacts capable of RAW, to phone cams.

I would define a cheap camera as the average consumer grade stuff. Cameras that can be conveniently carried in a pocket or purse. And cost perhaps $200 max. I don't even include my Powershot S5 IS in that group, as it a bit larger and has a lot of high end features.

The phone cam side challenge was a bit more restrictive on camera quality due to the nature of the SC. I think the only ones who had a decent camera phone were the Iphone owners.

Absolutely it's the camera... I mean these days, you give any modern camera with everything automated to a monkey... even they can take much better pictures than YOU COULD in your life time.

Watch and learn...

Maybe define a max of MP?

I would enjoy doing that SC.

How would something like this be structured? I think we'd have to define "cheap camera" lol. And I have no idea how to do that. If you guys can help me come up with a definition, we can open another thread and see who is interested :)

Oh come on Nick. Just a first glance on your profile page already shows 2 top 10 photographs and a bunch of +6 scores.
Doesn't look that bad to me if you're asking me.
In my case, a +6 score means I did very good. A top 10 score I'm not even talking about what it would mean to me.

Duh! Nothing! How the heck could you possibly compensate for direct sunlight streaming through windows in back of black musicians???????

It just goes with the territory.......8>)

Umm, dial down the ambient light in camera and use flash to illuminate the subject? Sorry, K10Dguy isn't around so someone has to bust your chops. :P

I actually did have the exposure comp dialed down a bunch. Didn't particularly want to blast a flash in their faces, and liked the silhouette effect.....

You have *NO* idea how bright that light was!
