Hi langdon and SC,

I've long mentioned this, but I believe part of the value of DPChallenge is in its vast collection of images.

When a membership expires, a person's portfolio becomes inaccessible and all threads containing links to said photos are replaced with the ugly 726452.jpg

Why should the whole site be devalued when someone becomes inactive? Why punish everyone if someone decides to stop being a member?

Instead, why not leverage the site value toward making people want to become members? Make all portfolios from all time available for viewing. Then for non-paying users, simply add a timeout to the viewing:

Ironically, as my membership is expiring, the above preview which concisely explains my suggestion won't be accessible in a couple weeks. =D

Just to clarify a few points, 1) challenge entries are not affected (you still need to attract wandering freeloaders to the site), 2) expired members can't upload to their portfolios, and 3) paying members never see this delay message.

The only change is that non-paying users must wait to see any portfolio (non-challenge entry) content - a great incentive to buy a membership which doesn't penalize everybody. Oh, and a bunch of old favorites and forum threads become useful again.

Let the nay-saying begin...

Under normal circumstances, entries must be permanent to maintain any semblance of challenge history for the purposes of site operation. However portfolio images may be added and removed at the whim of members, and DPC does not have the licensing rights to continue displaying them.

You'd see a HUGE drop in images posted to threads if people knew they could never remove the image, I'm sure. That's absolutely draconian. Just because I want to share something with you this week, doesn't mean I want to share it forever, sheesh.

Ah - another clarification: When I said "Make all portfolios from all time available for viewing" I didn't really mean all photos from all time. I meant those which the site in effect removed because memberships expired.

But you make a few good points - users can still break things by removing photos, and past members should be able to remove content - just not add anymore.

One should consider anything posted to the Internet as shared forever. There are sites devoted to retaining all information on the Internet over time.

The suggestion is not to take away any control/rights from photographers - let them remove photos if they see fit. My whole point is that it's needless and self defacing, imo, for the site to block portfolios of expired members.

This could be a sweet deal for someone that could be inclined to pay the $25 one time, load up their portfolio in a nice, controlled, viewable layout and then forever be able to point people to it. Of course they wouldn't be able to update it, but still...

That's really not true at all. There is too much data uploaded to the internet every second for anybody to cache.

What is being suggested here violates the rights photographers have to their images. We have a right to a way to remove our images from public view.

The upload limit and the 10 second delay pretty much nullify this argument.

It really is true. You'd be wise to consider anything you post as public. You have no idea on how many computers your bytes (image/text/offhand comments) are being stored, cached, indexed, computed.

I tire of arguing this theme as it's not at all what is being suggested. You'll find my response in previous posts.

Hmmmm. Well, you can get a ton of 200-300kb images uploaded with 100mb standard limit. The 10 second delay would shoot down using DPC for a ref to an online port for prior members...however, that could be a tough item to sell to Langdon IMO.

It's a moot point— I don't think DPC has the legal right to display portfolio images if the account is closed. Only challenge entries are permanent. Anything else would put this site at risk of copyright litigation.

This is the reason why I dont post photos on Facebook any more either... I didnt like their perpetual use of my photos clause. I wouldnt want DPC to adopt such a policy either.

There is some discussion around that google will start taking page performance into search ratings, so probably not a great idea to add a delay. I would vote (I have said this a number of times) just making the thumb non-clickable as it's just the least worst from an interface point of view compared to going to a dead page.

Ah - I think the confusion is that I use the phrase "no longer a member". What I mean is someone that still is a registered user of the site, but their paid subscription has run out - not someone who has requested that their portfolio or account be removed. Surely they're not legally regarded in the same manner.

For instance, didn't Art's subscription run out for a few days last year? That's a lot of threads with missing Godzilla images. Art was still in good standing and just waiting for his unemployment, err child support, err, loan shark, err, lottery earnings, err weekly paycheck to rectify the situation.

I fully support photographers willfully removing images from the site, whether paid or free or past users - that should definitely be maintained as it is now.

Please consider this suggestion withdrawn - I've reviewed and restated the suggestions in another thread. It seems what I was requesting is already available.
