in the burned version some areas of the skies appears as more purple/greyish then pink where there was little pink in the original image.. do you guys think that looks okay, or would you do something differently to make them look more pink?

i guess one approach is the clone tool? or even selective color balance adjustment? maybe i should burn the midtones more then the shadows.. or a completely different approach?

JaimeVinas: Thanks, I will try that.

glad2badad: I tried measuring it with the PS ruler again (using other reference points), and found I might rotate it somewhere around 0.80deg? This is the result: //hekta.org/~jab/img/3.jpg

george917: Thanks. I followed your tip and this is what came out of it: //hekta.org/~jab/img/4.jpg I might have overdone it a bit? I also darkened the midtones in the bottom part a little bit.

Starbanana: Thanks, I think I agree it looks better with a bit more crop.

zeuszen, jdannels and Bear_Music: I agree with your suggestions. The tripod i was carrying is a really big one (for heavy video cameras i think) that can't go as close to the ground as a normal one. Image 1 is put together from two exposures so I did rely on the tripod. I think I will grab another tripod and go back if the weather stays about the same.. Great images you guys posted btw :)

ZZ has it right. Jdannels has it right. Here's an example from me that does what Joe's talking about:

I would suggest shooting from a lower angle. Especially with an ultra wide angle lens, shooting at head height will have everything feel small and distant, unless you have a very large object in front of you. Getting a lower perspective allows the viewer to have something closer to them and suck them in to the image. The scene is extraordinary and you did well. But in the horizontal image, with a lower perspective, you could replace half of that sky with iceflow and the leading line of the bank.
As an example, this image is shot roughly 18 inches off the ground and I wish I would have gotten closer.

I do like both images, and just trying to add something to think about. :)

Both shots are quite compelling. The bottom one is more universally appealing, while the top one clads sufficient mystery to warrant longer pleasure.

For additional improvement beyond suggestions already made, I'd like to see a more dominant point (or points) of interest in the foreground of no. 1 (top). I'd love to see more of the floes, which could only be achieved by a shift of perspective that would have more detail more centrally composed. The way it is, the eye nearly has to scan the image first before it can feast on caviar (something the second image accomplishes quite successfully, btw).

Agree with both comments so far.
For me the top one is stunning, although they are both very pretty and have a slightly strange alien quality about them. Maybe skew it a little so the eye stops being fooled that its tilting when it may not be :) The ring of cloud in it is lovely.
On the bottom one I would say take the sky down to where its just starting to turn darker, so you keep some of that gradient but loose the rest which isnt needed. Maybe trim a smidge off the bottom too?

They are both really nice though & I would love to have taken them!!

The top one has great composition and quite the wow factor. I'd add a bit more contrast to the clouds, maybe by burning midtones and shadows there.

I agree. I like the top image better of the two, however it does seem like it may be tilted a bit (might be an optical illusion because of the curved line of the land).

I took two pictures yesterday, it was about -20degC and there was a lot of fog by the shore. I like the composition, but I still feel like there is more that can be done to improve them. Please tell my what you think, especially about the first one. I appreciate all your thoughts, positive and negative :)
