as always, a really useful thread. Thanks hopper! I love the last image you posted (as well as the others, of course). It's really interesting to see the effects of the sun so high with the flash.

I think most prefer to keep the images smaller in the threads and have linkable thumbs. Members are able to from their galleries, though I believe you can use bb code with photobucket to do the same.

BtW I really enjoy these three you posted much more then your entry. These three seem to have something more to them. Specially the second near candid with them all laughing is really nice.

I'll second that! I might use a few of the examples in this thread to try some different setups - I seriously like lvicari's setup for Blue Man - now I just have to get the kids to cooperate! If they do I'll post them and my setup. Thanks hopper for a truly great thread!

Here are some of my home studio shots. I used two Calumet Travelight strobes with softbox and umbrella.

Thank you guys so much! I am doing a family portrait shoot inside today at 11:30 at their house so this is really helpful for tips. I think they are wanting traditional, dress-up portraits, which is pretty much out of my norm since I usually like to try for more creative "fun" poses. But this lighting information is a big help. THANK YOU!

Can't wait to see the setups for your dance pics. Although, I didn't see any icons in the PS file for those Elinchrome 1200's you use. Maybe something like this..

GREAT thread, I might have to see if I can come up with some diagrams for some of mine and put them on here.

The PW's are rated to go up to 1/8000 high sync. On the white background I'm not trying to blur the back ground. I could If I shot at approx. 1/3000 f2.8. but prob. wouldn't see it. As far as the strobes themselves, never maxed them out to full power in the studio.

how fast can you get the shutter before the light power takes a hit?

The two reasons I bought the tt1& tt5 PW was to be able go higher then the max 200 sync capped by the 5D and be able to shoot wide open and blur the background.

I really like this thread and thank you for the lighting diagram, it is very cool.

Here i would like to share my experience with outdoor portrait lighting and setup, which is very simple and sometimes very challenging, but in the end is very rewarding result.

The two reasons I bought the tt1& tt5 PW was to be able go higher then the max 200 sync capped by the 5D and be able to shoot wide open and blur the background. I find with kids 4 or 5 and under have a hard time staying still, so the faster shutter speed helps. I do have a light meter and have shot at 1/200 sync, in fact if I lowered the iso to 100 I'd be at 1/200. The PW's just gives me control.

Originally posted by hopper:

Did you use 1/400 shutter in order to stop the action, or just because your lights are so bright? Have you tried 1/200 (most cameras top sync speed, roughly) and had trouble with a touch a motion blur, or am I just reading into it too much?

Thanks for contributing :)
