but they're not freebies that I particularly need. I don't have a monopod, my strap is fine, I don't need the date book, the lens cap, or the body cap. I don't know about the canon guidebook or lens workbook, maybe I should look them up. The trial loaners was really tempting, though... I figured this is an annual thing, and that it isn't paying for itself this time, but maybe next year...

There is also an additional 10% discount on the repairs. The monopod cover, strap, and body caps sold on the internet will pay for the $100 for most cases. In fact the Strap which is a CPS branded OPtech usually brings $45-$50 by itself. And I've been looking for a second one for my second body, the sell so fast its unreal.

If you were thinking about buying a 70-200L, you could try it first. But since I just got my first L series lens, it will be a heck of a long time before the next one. (took 14 years for the 1st one...)

Two weeks! That's cheaper than renting! Hmmm could take some really nice, crappy pictures with L glass.

I'm not sure I would go for the $100 CPS, unless you are going to use both cleanings, and rack up a sizable bill.

I miss my camera!!!!! I hate the 20D (never did like it--the focus is soft, and the burst is so slow now!)

I still haven't sent in the 40D--talked to Canon today, and they're sending out a label so I don't have to pay for shipping. I signed up for a CPS membership, that gives me a discount on service. The frustrating thing was this: I didn't know whether to do the free CPS membership, or pay the $100 for the gold. The gold includes two free cleanings. Considering that I've never sent any of my digitals over the years in to be cleaned, I wanted to know what a cleaning costs. Is it worth the $100 buck membership for an extra 10% off service and two free cleanings?

I called tech support--they wouldn't tell me how much it costs to clean a 40D. They said to email.

I emailed. This is their response:

Dear Wendy:

Thank you for your inquiry. We value you as a Canon customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you.

We do apologize for any inconvenience but any repair or maintenance costs are given once the camera is received and evaluated as the prices can vary and we do not have the specific prices here at technical support. We gave you a ballpark figure and that's all we can give you without having the camera sent in for service.

Keep in mind that you will receive a free estimate which will give you the chance to decide whether it is economical or not for you to service the camera. If you decide not to have the unit repaired or cleaned then we will ship the unit back to you free of charge.

We hope this information is helpful to you. Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance with your EOS 20D.

Thank you for choosing Canon.

Sincerely,

Shane
Technical Support Representative

I have to send the camera in to get an estimate on CLEANING!?! They've got to be out of their mind! Other than the fact that I hated my 20D, I loved my A2 that I started with. I loved the digital rebel that I upgraded to, I hated the 20D, I loved the 40D until it broke (still love it, and want it fixed) but I'm really beginning to hate Canon. I spent about an hour on the phone with them today. They wouldn't give me a base price on replacing a shutter, even though I told them that I understood it could be something else, that I was just looking for a starting point. But not giving me the price of a CLEANING?!?

Why do companies have to be so stupid, especially when you've spent a lot of money on their equipment?

I thought the whole idea behind buying digital over film was because you could waste your shots. I don't expect my camera to last forever, but I hate the idea that I have to worry about the number of pictures I take.

I'd send it in and try and get a better camera from them in the meantime :)

And to Slippy: I think your worries about the 40d's durability are well founded.

White smoke is the life essence of all things electronic. The creators put it in at the moment of creation of the chip. (Kinda like a soul.) When the white smoke is released, the chip closes its eyes never to awake again.

You said it better than I could have. Maybe you could add "expensive" just ahead of the word "life" in the description, and it would be complete.
In my case, it was the focus motor control board and a couple of other things that smoked.
Then there are those ambiguous "Error" codes. They are sort of like the little "Check Wallet" light that comes on in the dash of your car when something major is about to release the white smoke.

My camera is really simple, but i had a problem with the diafragm and it costed me about 200 reais, or 103.80 US dollars to fix it in a authorized place for Canon's...But that kind of thing is really expensive in my country, because almost everything has do be imported, so...i think you will pay 200 dollars or just a little more.

Also, I'm not getting a very warm-fuzzy feeling about the life expectancy of my 40D from this thread. :-(

So, it's time for the Ouija board? ask what went wrong and find the truth?

White Smoke sounds like the same stuff that adds a base cost of at least $400 any time I ever bring my car to a mechanic. I don't think I like it.

I would definitely try the full reset first. I use a couple of beat up Fuji S3's and had one of them glitch out while I was in Montana last summer. The reset solved the problem, and no trouble at all with that one since.
About 3 years ago, I had to send the other one back to the shop one time after about 150K clicks because white smoke came out of it. They pack all these electronic items with white smoke, and if that gets out of there, they just don't seem to work right after it happens. They repacked the smoke for about $400 that time, and it has been fine since then.

Man, that's why I got my D300 and Thinkpad. Guess I missed the ship on that one....

Sorry to hear about your troubles with the 40D though. Didn't you post not too long ago with intermittent problems vawendy, or is my memory failing me?
