Same here! I LOVE my shot this time around and I think it fits the theme fine, people may not think it is clear-cut opposites, but oh well, that's what they think. I am proud of the shot and can't wait to make a print of it!

I don't see why all the griping about so many fire and ice. Remember, there is a limited topic for the challenge, and out of 300 and some odd entries, do you really expect 300 and some odd different original ideas? Besides, I think it makes voting on those couple dozen or so shots easier because you have a lot to compare each of them to. Look at a fire and ice and say hmmm, is it better or worse than the 10 I've seen so far, is it composed better, is it more dynamic, is it blurry, etc. etc. Why gripe about it? Why not just let it make the really creative shots just be even more appreciated? I guess it matters whether you are a positive or negative person. Oh, and by the way, I did not enter a fire and ice so no, I'm not lobbying for my own cause.

Too true. I actually had a great idea for this challenge, a wildly popular idea for an opposite. You will never guess. OK it was Fire and Ice. I drew it up on paper, set up the staging to photograph my drawing in the real world, and actually got the self same shot that I drew with the color and the front to back focus and everything that most voters want. Thought I had nailed the beast. I figures this was what the voters want. Stupid me. 2.3.ect.
However it is if I say so myself a fine shot; and I will not despair the folk who have ripped it hardest have very few photographs to their credit, and even if they hate it, I am glad I made the shot. If people can't judge it because it is similar to other shots I pray they never get to vote on a portrait challenge (What? Another face of a human being? 2).
At any rate sorry for the rant and I have faith that the long knives tend to come out early and that the people with lives (unlike myself) they tend to vote more logically, and later. As Scarlet O’Hara said “Tomorrow is another day"

I agree with LycanMoon. Mine may not be the best, as I am starting out in photography also. But this site sure doesn't encourage new people to try, all they want to do is tear you down and make you feel like you shouldn't even OWN a camera. I have been on this site for quite some time now even though I have only entered the challenges recently. There is NO one on here who can say their stuff is perfect. NO shot is. If I scanned a print of Ansel Adams and posted it like it was mine, I bet 20 people would say it was horrible.

There are way too many bitter people on this site. So you get a couple of 2,3, or 4 votes and you are gonna tear everyone else down for it? Come on people, this is ridiculous. It's suppose to be FUN. It's suppose to HELPFUL. No offense to the owners of the site, as I'm sure you have really good intentions and never meant for this site to become so petty. I am definitely regretting shelling out money to be here. I think you should be a paid member just to enter challenges. At least it would weed out some of these people who have nothing better to do than post horrible comments.

i personally dont have a problem with negative comments so long as they are constructive criticism..i have ZERO comments on my post a low score amd nothing to either learn from nor any idea why my post was voted so poorly..as a newbie I thought the whole idea was to learn from challenges so I could improve the quality of my work..but all I see in here is a bunch of people whining about no good posts and no one offering any CONSTRUCTIVE advice..yeah I agree there are some that look thrown together and rushed..but I also TELL those people so they can improve their posts for next time instead of tearing them down out here in forums..if you havent posted a comment IN the challenge..or posted a pic in there shut up and stop bitching about the people that are at least TRYING to learn

Colors. There also seems to be confusion with some voters on whether or not colors, other than black and white, have opposites. This may help.

Fire and ice works for me.

Sorry to revist the fire/ice episode, BUT, I think they work as opposites... they essentially contradict each other in every way, and the presence of one destroys the other... and that's my two cents.. =]

I guess my pic wasnt as good as I thought - but funny story is I got the idea when I was making my two year olds breakfast. I had been trying to figure out something that wasnt so overdone and I must have set up that silly cereal a hundred times before I picked my shot. I laughed at my own sillyness and had some fun while trying to get a good pic. This was my first time submitting to this site and I have to say the people who have taken time to comment on my pic have been constructive and not mean so hopefully I will have a chance to learn here.

Guess everybody listened to that old Pat Benatar song and came up with their ideas... :o)

Way too many fire and ice shots. I got through about 65% of the photos and gave up.

I am in favor of the most liberal interpretation of the challenge topic ... someone just asked a specific question about ice. I personally will vote based on how much I like the photo and how well the photographer achieved the desired goal, whatever that was.

Remember, if you're nit-picking it means you're a lousy person.

:)

wow is this a photography website or a physics exam?? its getting to be about nitpicking on whether things are opposites?? seems to be a backlash building seems to me because people arent getting the kinda votes they feel they deserve..there are alotta new photographers on here submitting for the first time and instead of encouragement and constructive criticisms they can learn from all I am seeing here is alotta self righteous smug camera clickers bitching about the lack of quality posts...if you can do better post one or quit bitching about others!! Being a newbie myself you all make me not wanna even submit my stuff because instead of helpful criticisms all you do is either tear it down without real help or you nitpick..since I doubt there are any PERFECT photographers on this website..stop casting stones and HELP people instead of tearing them down!!!

I don’t really even think steam is the opposite of ice. Is there really an opposite of ice? When I think of the opposite of ice I think more along the lines of solid hexane or something along those lines. Maybe the opposite of ice is sodium borohydride or something like that? I never really thought of fire and ice as being opposites other than that one is hot and the other is cold (clearly in my mind anyway opposite).

Steam would be more opposite of ice, since liquid water is an intermediate physical state between the two. Since actual steam is an invisible gas, it's kinda hard to photograph -- ice and steam might work well with an infra-red setup though ...

It's funny..I was watching the number of submissions and for a while there were relatively low number of submissions..I think the day before the deadline there were 180 posts..then like an hour before the deadline they shot up to over 300..seems like alot of people just threw something out there in a hurry to get to the deadline and some of them show..I agree some of the opposites were a stretch..but its starting to feel like to me that there is alotta hostility building because of bad votes..whats next torches and lynch mobs?

while we are at it:

Is ice really the opposite of water, or are they just the same substance in different physical states?

I counted 25 variations of fire and ice/water, and a half dozen chess sets.
Wasn't a full moon, so must be that DP'ers think alike!

I find it interesting that some folks don't enter because they don't have a good enough shot. I'm certainly not implying that we can all generate amazing shots repeatedly on demand, but it seems to me like the act of trying to get something for submission is part of what makes you better. It stretches the creative muscles... My opposites entry is actually doing about +1.5 better than I'd anticipated despite being a close call on time, and not what I thought to be my best work.

Just an observation. I'm still pretty new, so maybe I just haven't hit my first photographer's block.

And while your on the subject

Is fire the opposite of Ice?

or could steam be the opposite of Ice?

Are my feet Left and right opposites or a pair?

Is a reflection in a mirror an opposite or just a reflection?

Confused????

I'm quite new at DPChallenge and I think my problem is that I don't use my ideas or do what I had planned to do. I thought of this:

At the moment I'm just getting some "five's" for what I sent but somehow I think i would have got mor for this "ice and fire" image I didn't send to the challenge!
05/12/2004 03:29:58 PM · #24
I think there are a lot of things that aren't opposite but merely go together.
Things like cat and dog (I don't actually think there are any cat and dogs, it's just an example).
A cat is not the opposite of a dog!!!

agree with the weakness of this challenge. i didn't enter...not inspired, no time--but i do enjoy voting in challenges that i don't participate in. this one's got me stumped. go figger.
