Lutchenko, neither was I suggesting that your suggesting that I was suggesting any shots were easy; nor was I making any suggestion that you messing around was suggestive in regards to any offenses taken on my behalf. And if that's makes any sense to you, I suggest you explain it to me—simply!! |

Anyway, regardless of anything I've said on this thread regarding your photo, I just want to stress that you fully deserve your blue ribbon. I certainly don't want to take away any of the joy from receiving that award. Well done. |

Hi Carlo, only just spotted this thread and as it directly references my shot I thought I'd chip in FWIW.
When I researched 'Still Life' bottles and glasses (along with flowers, grapes, pots and vases) all came up time and time again. I tried to create something visually pleasing that wasn't a direct copy of some of the other refraction shots that are very common on DPC. In the context of a Still Life challenge you are always going to get wine glasses I guess.
For me the challenege was the lighting (as technically it is very hard not to get harsh highlights) and creating the coloured background to blend and smooth into the glasses. I guess I achieved that sufficiently to make it appealing for the 'masses' although I have some sympathy with your (and others view) about repetition of entries. That is the nature of DPC (and a Still Life chaellenge) I guess.
DPC is a competition and winning a ribbon and getting a high score is part of the fun for me. Conversely I couldn't enter just pics with mass appeal for the sake of achieving high scores or just trying to get ribbons. My current and last Free Study entries are shots I love but they don't do very well and the shots I get most pleasure from taking are most definately not that voter friendly. My new goal is to get a PG/ribbon with a shot I love. Now that would be awesome!
Having said all of that, I still intend to attempt and enter a water drop, get a great sunset, do some more flowers on a black (or white) background, do a great macro of a bug, enter a great nude etc etc etc, simply because they are all challenging in their own right and that is what helps me get better at what I love doing.
Obviously all this won't change your opinion on shots of wine glasses but I hope this helps give some insight into how and why I entered the shot I did :)

Firstly, I don't read the forums much and created a topic that's almost hypocritical. Secondly, most the comments have been helpful, but this one stands out the most. Probably 90% of photos in DPC are "clichĂ©", how can you rule out 90%! The fact is, I don't like the glass shots much and they come up relatively often—not really worth starting a forum topic about. The fact that it got a blue ribbon shows most don't have the same view as me. |

I didn't mean to imply that any of these shots are easy; in fact, I have always appreciated their technical difficulty.
It's interesting that you have posted this Broken Crown image. Unlike the other wine/cocktail glass images that I'm tired of seeing, this one I'm not. It suddenly occurred to me why I find those "other" glass images so putrid. It has nothing to do with being cliché, rather, it's the dated 80's two (or more) tone background colours ("colors" for the non-Assie folks) that repel me when seeing them over and over again. It all makes sense now!

Places that do not reward people for coming in first?
Actually, if you want to find the new and unique stuff here, I would suggest looking at the stuff that comes in mid-pack in most challenges. This is where you will find good photography that is different enough to not have the broad appeal factor that comes in at the top. |

This comment deserves a 10. but then I will probably be accused of friend voting so I am only going to give it a 5. which is probably going to be thought of as cliche. hmm do I dare bump it up to a 6?
