the item linked in the OP is very low power strobed - 45ws is less than a canon 580. For the money it's not a bad deal, but i can make you a good deal on a $10 bicycle too - it's worth the $10 but it's not much of a bicycle.

try these - //www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/569838-REG/Interfit_INT427_Stellar_X_300_Flash.html. I've got 6 of the older model and they work very well, well built, great customer service and you won't outgrow them.
If you can find the older model (stellar without the X) you will probably get a great deal on them.

The Calumet lights are not truck-proof though. (Related to this thread)

Elinchrom D-Lite 4 Kit or even the D-lite 2 kit, worth the extra $$s, I shoot with the 4's and they always produce the goods

Hey guys,
I'm thinking of buying an AC Strobe lighting kit in the next month or so to get familiar with studio lighting.
I found this kit on B&H which seems like a steal for the price, and it has some pretty good reviews too.
Has anyone used this kit or something similar in this price range that they would recommend or could provide an opinion on?
Thanks.

Please dont take my words in the wrong way, this kit is useless, My advice is to spend couple of days reading //www.strobist.com learn about gear, then take start looking for a purchase. AlienBees are wonderful, but you can start using normal flashes, much better than this kit, do the reading first, then you will have a better idea. Jjust my humble opinion,
All the best,

okay, thanks. i have read up on all of strobist's "101" posts, but regardless of which direction i choose, i'll have to buy gear, whether its flashes or AC strobes. that's why i was wondering if that might be an acceptable kit to start with.

From what I can see, these Smith Victor units are probably not better than Canon (or Nikon) flash units. You might do much better spending money on Bogen light stands (Craigs List is a good source for these - speaking from experience), umbrellas, and Canon flash units.

except that this solution will turn out to be much more expensive. the cheapest Canon flash is $100-ish. 3 of those, stands, umbrellas, etc... :-/

I was seriously considering similar packages but ended up throwing caution to the wind and bought an AlienBee AB400, stand and a softbox and absolutely love them and don't regret it one bit, Im planning on getting an AB800 or better within the next year...

yeah i know what you mean, but one AB400 is the price of this whole kit! i guess you get what you pay for.
