hmm, mixed replies... I think I'll save up a bit more money then and just get a quality lens that'll last me a good long while without having to upgrade later.

I had one....it was decent, but I really wanted the 18-200 VR that I now have and like MUCH better.

Bear in mind that lens does not have an internal focus motor.

I know my daughter's D40 can't use it, I dunno if your D40x has the motor in the body or not.

I did have a bunch of decent shots with the lens: Here.

My copy of a 28-300 was awful! I sent it back. Their 18-270VR gets much better reviews and ratings, and I did get one of those. I consider it acceptable :)

I have the Canon mount of that lens for about a year now. I believe NikonJeb also has it in the Nikon mount. The shot that just won my first ribbon was taken with it.

I paid $225 for mine but have not seen it at that kind of a price again. At longer distances, the 300mm end can get a little soft (as do many lenses), but at this price point, I really can't call that a serious flaw. The barrel tends to extend a little if you hold the camera pointing down. Again not a huge issue at that price. I think it's a good deal. If I had $600 to burn right now, I might get Tamron's 18-270 VR.

Here are some of my other shots taken with that lens:

Hey guys, I found a Tamron 28-300mm lens for $300. I've never used a Tamron before and don't have any experience with them. Is it worth the money or should I go for a Sigma instead?

Any comments would be appreciated as I'm looking to buy within the next couple of days. Thanks guys and gals!
