I was happy to have found this site, I was reading your posts about slideshows and starting your business. I did this also, only word of mouth, I sold a few shows and I absolutely love it. This is my passion. I use pro show producer and photoshop. I work in the floral industry full time, I have for 20 years, but I know this is what I want to do. I had a hard time marketing myself. I am not so good selling mysel although I have to admit.. my shows can sell themselves. I have seen many others thru the years and know my shows beat them by far. So here is my issue. I want to leave my job now and work for someone pursuing my dream. I didnt seem to make it on my own, so I would love to do this full time working for someone else. I just dont know who. I dont know where. How do I get started in the field. I am great at what I do but do not know who to approach. I wish I could have made a go of it on my own, I have even tried to find a niche, maybe just focusing on landscapers maybe.... a virtual business card. I have lots of ideas but feel so alone in this. I wish I could go to work for a company at this point. Any suggestions from you guys would be great for me, I'm happy to see other people besides myself have the passion! Thanks, Susan

re: music on slideshows - there are resources/websites that sell royalty-free music. And no, they're not your TOP 20 radio hits - but it's legit. Also, there are MANY independent musicians that would love to get their music heard by people. Perhaps look some up online or in your area??

I could sing, but that's not going to set a mood that I want to take pictures in LOL

It better be originals, cause unless you have the proper license for karaoke/cover band performances...youll get busted for that too.

What's more idiotic is that after I made my slide show with a song from Simple Minds, a Warner owned group, 2 of the 20 people that had access to view it went to Itunes and PURCHASED THE SONG !!!!

Did you know....
That to play music on hold a phone you need to pay for the rights to do it?
That it is illegal to play the radio in a store as 'music' in the background? And if you want to play a CD well, that's illegal too. Both fall under the public performance part of their rights.

Again, what are the odds you'll get busted? Pretty slim...but Iv'e had customers that are in the recording industry as clients, I've had IRS employees as clients...and all it takes is one ticked off client (or competitor!) to blow the whistle and you better have one good umbrella for the sh!t storm thats headed your way!

There was a case reported in the local press here of a small vehicle maintenance company having a radio on for the workers to listen to. The Performing Rights Society contacted that company and basically told them that they'd have to buy a licence for this. To me, this is a complete nonsense, as the broadcaster is already paying for the dubious privilege of playing music over the air, but that's the way it is, it seems.

Prof Fate is right....the music is a BIG part of those slide shows. If you are making money from the slide shows...you are breaking da law !

See my previous comments...I had a slide show I made for myself and others to "look at" NOT to sell ! I was informed by Warner Music Group via Facebook that I was in violation because I was using one of WMG's songs in the video. It even went as far as to say that even if the video contains BACKGROUND music of a WMG song, it is in violation ! This means that if you video your kids playing guitar hero...and you can hear a WMG song...then you can not post that video on the web....

So I KNOW that selling slide shows with copyright music will not fly !

**I just read some of Prof's links...my god...there is something called Sync Rights...you need a Sync License to sync music to pictures...and this is ANYTIME...not just of you're going to sell the product....!

Admission will not be charged to see the slideshow
The slideshow and DVD will not be mass-produced
The slideshow will not be resold or recopied
The slideshow has no impact on the market for copyrighted work

BAD assumption. There's a good chance you won't get caught and have to pay big money, but you ARE breaking the law. You are using someone else's artistic work (their music) for profit - you are getting paid for the slideshows, right? You are putting their music in the slideshow, right? And getting paid to do it, right? Without the artists' permission, right? The rest of it does not matter.

Read the rights to music very carefully and perhaps consult and IP attorney. What you are doing is synchronizing music and pictures and what you need to do this is called 'synch rights'.

Now how would you ever get caught, you say? You never know who is going to walk through your door and what their job is, what their relatives do, what their pet peeves are. EVERYONE has a pet peeve - they don't like speeders or jaywalkers or people that talk with their mouth full, etc. All it takes is one customer to have an interest in the music business, is anal about copyright, etc and they can make your life absolutely miserable.

Is it worth the risk? IMO, no way. But then I make my living with my business and if for any reason I was closed down or fined tons of money I'd be ruined - business, reputation, financially, and perhaps be living in a box under a bridge (a better option than moving in with my mother in law at least).

You can give them the slideshow with rights free music or no music and be perfectly legal. What? You say they won't want that, won't pay as much for it? Then that is proof positive beyond any doubt that using 'real' music is making you a real profit - and you owe the artist/publisher/performer/writer/producer their cut (and you didn't think it was about the money, right?)

Oh well...don't use any WMG Warner Music Group music (which is just about ALL music ever recorded) in any videos. They will be removed.

If this link works, you can see my reunion video.

This slide show has some nice pics from Grace King High School 1984 as well as some from a reunion 5 years ago. We have another reunion coming up and I'm doing some slide shows for the party.

This looks great, but its for Windows, not mac. Did I forget to mention I am a mac?

I use Adobe Premiere Elements and have been very happy with it. It's very easy to use.

This would be perfect if they made a MAC VERSION!!! How fustrating!!

Check Pinnacle Studio then. A brief google makes me think it comes in the MAC flavour.

I use Photodex Proshow Producer to make wedding DVD's for my clients. They tend to be more popular than the prints/album. I give it to them in DVD format (for TV) and also as a web video and screen saver. I also use Adobe Premiere Elements for video. I am looking at upgrading to the full version of Premiere. After using Photoshop on stills, I feel like I am using MS Paint in comparison when using Elements to edit video. Very limited...
I bought Pinnacle Studio, but it just crashed all the time. My friend recently bought a Dazzle video import device that came with Pinnacle Studio software, and it crashed his computer as well. He removed it and now uses Premiere Elements.

My wife is using Adobe Premier Elements (came free on our last two SOny Viaos). This has proved a really superb tool - much easier to use than windows movie maker. She is on a roll at the moment with quarterly installments on our daughter. Still trying to work out how to stagger children movies when a second comes along.

I have a question, I do slideshows for my wedding clients... I include all their pics to a few songs they choose. I use an imac and have great difficulty with imovie and idvd that is installed on it, so I have been using windows movie maker on my daughters computer when she lets me. Does anyone know what software I could get for my mac to make slideshows fairly easily??
