Many thanks to all for the advice! Sorry it didn't work out, but I've learned my lesson: announce my travel plans more than a day in advance. :)

Anyway, it was really nice having breakfast with FocusPoint and chatting with thegrandwazoo.

Man it looks like it is not meant to be. I too have a small issue to deal with, I just got a phone call and my girls car broke down and I need to get it home after work so it may not be until 9pm before I could get over there. Sorry, I wish we had been able to plan this out a little better. For sure the next time you are in Phoenix we have to get together or if I ever make it back to DC. This SUX I really wanted to go shoot with you...

Cave Creek is a beautiful town and it's not too far from where you're staying (maybe 30-45 minutes). Lots of cactus and desert plants and such. I bet you could get some great shots of our famous sunsets from there. There are tons of Old West themed shops and restaurants there if you're looking for some place to eat after shooting as well.

I have been wrangled into a big project for work tonight so I am out as well. I am really going to be upset about missing all of you. Have fun and be safe.

Just catching back up on this thread... I have a theatre show I am shooting tonight (I also designed sound for the show, so I'm "doubly-obligated" to be there), so I'm afraid I'm out. :(

I agree with cautioning concerning heading out here to the Superstitions. It's the most beautiful area with 100 miles, no doubt ;) but with traffic that time of night, leaving from your area, I'd bet you're looking at an hour to hour-and-a-half drive to get here. (Traffic that time of night will be the real killer).

Have fun -- I'll be thinking of you and send you happy-in-focus-well-exposed-breathtaking-photo thoughts!

<Shameless Plug>
If any of you want to come out to the show I'm working on, check out newcarpa.org. Free preview tonight! ;) Opens tomorrow night and runs the next two weekends. I hear the soundscape is really great. :D
BTW - Photos on web site are not mine. Not saying there is anything wrong with them......But I'm just sayin'.... ;)

Ok, let's meet at 6:30. Here at the resort or somewhere else (after Erick picks me up!)?

BTW, I walked the grounds tonight, and I think there are excellent opportunities even right here at night. In fact, I already have plans to essentially reshoot this using a saguaro cactus:

And the building and lighting are gorgeous.

Sorry it has taken me a while to reply. I can meet at 6:30 at the earliest. But I am ok shooting something closer or just food too. But let's meet up.

ETA: Love that CZ Backpack! I even asked Santa for one this year!

And Erick, if we're both up for it, we could go shoot stars (not necessarily a long drive, but somewhere closer?).

Frankly, though, it's 7:00 and I'm beat after a day of sitting in a conference!

I'm speaking on a panel from 3-4 tomorrow, so could be ready to go by about 4:30. Erick, if you're interested in hearing what EPA is doing w/Web 2.0, you'd be welcome to come listen in.

Well if we could leave that early (4:30) I would be interested. Its just the late hour that was scaring me off.

If you want to take photos of the giant Saguaro cactus, I would go to South Mountain Park. There are tons of them there.

My husband just gave me a reality check on this little GTG. It is quite a little drive to the Superstitions and I would be getting home quite late. I have to be to work very early which means I am normally in bed by 9. Can I change my vote to dinner/drinks and maybe just taking photos of each other. BTW, Focuspoint would like to show up to meet everyone but is not able to go on the shoot either.

I think I see my Carl Zeiss backpack Erick stole in that shot!

The resort he is staying at is Tatum and the 101 so up in North Phoenix. It is very close to Scottsdale as well. I am not opposed to driving someplace. I know it is a drive but the Superstitions are always great at night!

Holy crap. I had no idea some of my favorite DPCers are here! FocusPoint, too - I forgot he moved out here.

I'm here until Friday morning - probably working all day at this conference, but I might be free Thursday evening.

My flight leaves at 11:10 on Friday, but to get back on east coast time and for the chance to meet all of you, I'd get up way early. :)

Let me re-emphasize, though: I have no car. And I'm at some resort way NE - like 45 mins from the airport: JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa.

Oh, and I'll shoot anything, as you can see in my portfolio. :) I just like getting out in new areas and seeing things I haven't seen before.

Dude Desert Ridge Resort is 10 mins from my house and I have a big truck that we will fit in, very comfy!

I am all for trying a night shoot some place, I get off work at 5:30 I could get you at around 6:30 and we could meet up with Barbra and Leo. All we need to do is figure out a place to shoot and I am open to anything.

Heck if all we did was get together for some dinner and drinks and shoot pics of each other that would be cool with me! :-)

if it's a clear night, night shots with mountain backgrounds are always cool and fun.

I would be interested in a Thursday evening GTG. This might be just what I need to get off my lazy butt and take some photos again. Let me think about what might interest you photographically speaking.

Where will you be (or, by the time you see this, if you see it while you're still here, where are you?)

I used to work in downtown Phoenix, and I live in Apache Junction (a fuur peeeeece to the East), and know the bits-in-between pretty well.

Since you don't have a car, it'd help to know where you'll be stuck to offer some specific suggestions within reasonable walking distance, too.

What you are looking for, if you care? ("classic middle-of-the-desert flora" kinds of stuff, buildings, landscapes, people, whatever)
