I agree. An average score of 5 here isn't bad. In fact because we use a 10 point scale there is bound to be a lot of 5's. It would be interesting to see what would happen if the scale was 1-9 because that might actually raise average scores.

So, I haven't entered a challenge since July. I was pretty excited to enter benches because I was really happy with how my shot turned out. Started at a 6.4 and it stayed there for around 20 votes. All my comments have been great. My score, however, has dropped with every nice comment I get. Now I'm sitting at a 5.6. The comfort in all this is that despite my crappy score (to me, that's crappy) I've got people who want to pay me to photograph them. Take that, DPC! It's all your fault that I am now a professional photographer!

*This is just a note to those who think their score is the end all, be all. I'd love a 6+ score, but I'd rather have a career I love.*

No worries
There are haters out there voting down scores I've lost over .3 in the last day or so an I've gotten 14 very nice comments

What explains the votes? Beats me by this late in the game I would suspect that sub 5 votes is what is Hurting me

It's all cool anyway

I think it's a whole raft of things that cause the scores to be where they are...not the least which includes personal tastes, personal emotions and Trolls. ;)) Let's keep blaming the Trolls because it's the only explanation for some of the 1's, 2's and 3's being handed out to some pretty fantastic shots!

LOL Sharon....GOOD FOR YOU in saying what you have!!!

I so agree with you that if anyone is basing their "worth" as a photographer on the scoring in here, they are doing themselves a total injustice! You are proof of that as are a number of other members who are also professional photographers in here, being paid for their work and yet, cannot get their scores above "average" in here or, even lower.

I think that those who win ribbons in DPC or score high have found "the knack" to "the DPC LOOK" and therefore, do well. My congrats to them on that ability because it's not easy to figure out. However, as I've found out by watching some members in here who have entered other challenges in other sites that don't necessarily have the same tastes in the "DPC LOOK", it doesn't necessarily earn big scores or ribbons elsewhere. I've seen a photographer in here, enter a shot in a challenge here and it BOMBED in here, yet that very same photo ended up on the billboard in Times Square!!! :)) I also wanted to see what would happen with a photo from a famous photography firm (unknown to them, in a forum). It was literally torn to shreds and pretty much called "garbage". Yet, that firm is walking to the bank, cheque in hand and smiling...not waiting for a virtual ribbon! LOL What is that saying?

It's saying that just because your photo is sitting at a 4 in here or a 5...doesn't mean that it's worthless or that your work has no value. It's only saying that your photo rates that score HERE...based on DPC tastes. It also says not to take your score seriously and while there's a LOT that can be learned in here about photography and teaches us to have a more critical eye towards our works, it isn't the "authority" on what is good or what isn't. It's only a measure against how well one can achieve the most typically wanted style of photography for DPC.

Thanks for saying that Sharon because it's so true!! Best of luck with your photography outside of DPC because from your portfolio, I see some really lovely shots in there that show a lot of talent!!! :))

One very lovely benefit about scoring in the mid-5 range is it doesn't have as much of a drop when all those in the stratosphere start dropping. Going from a 5.6 to a 5.4 for example is really rather painless! :-) So far my average given in this challenge is WELL over 6. I'm very much enjoying it. Back to voting...

I don't think it would have done good anyways... There are some simple things that I did not do correctly on this shot... For example the upper right corner was WAY overexposed. What do you all think??? Tell me honestly... I'm up for the criticism! Hehe...

I think that you likely would have felt a pinch because it really wasn't a bench. Likely a good thing that you didn't enter it. I think people wouldn't really have looked fully at the photo itself in other aspects because they would likely have been thinking DNMC anyways.

Just making you feel better about not putting it in! ;)

I have dropped further from just over 7.1 down to 6.52. Every vote takes me lower. Hopefully I finish over 6!
11/26/2008 10:58:13 AM · #25
Is it just me, or is everyone being killed in the last two days?

Mine has dropped .3 in the last day and half. :(

at 88 votes I went from 6.85 to a 6.57 in the last 20 or so votes :(

All hopes to making it to the top 10 are looking grim
