I had some slush to drive through, then a lot of rain. We had a new school bus driver who quit today because she had a hill to go down and she was afraid to go down it with it covered with slush. Heck, I stopped for a rider on my commuter bus today and ended up sliding right past her. We only had three accidents in the area though. So we did pretty good (with no injuries).

*shaking head pityingly* Sheila, you poor thing...go sit down with your head between your knees, it'll soon pass...and enjoy those frigid bone-chilling winds blowing in off of the ocean...

And Ray, the 416/417 is madness esp this time of year...why not just take the old 16 into town? You can get virtually anywhere in Ottawa within a few minutes drive off of Prince of Wales.

I always like a good snow storm somewhere else! Winter here has been real tough with all the 60+ degree weather but I am sure we will be able to tough it out!

I was on the road before 0600hrs, (with my new snow tires I might add) and the ride into Ottawa was quite nice. Mind you, once I got to the junction of the 416 and 417, I rather wished I had stayed in bed.

Tonight, on my way home I get to pick up my brand new 30inch snowblower. :O)

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

According to the weather report, I was supposed to wake up to 1-2 inches of white stuff today. *pout* Nothing!!! They are saying we're supposed to get 4-9 inches today, but I'm not holding my breath. *pout* If we get enough snow fast enough I don't have to finish work (I drive for a living).

This was a few years ago, but, one cold and icy morning, I was driving on the freeway to work. Like everyone else, I was putting along at about 30mph because it was pretty slick. I come up behind this semi that's going about 25 mph, so I pull into the left lane to pass. About halfway past the semi, this moron in his Explorer comes flying up behind me, blinking his lights, tooting his horn, his bumper about 2" from the rear of my car. I don't speed up. Once I pass the semi and get into the right lane, he shoots by at about 50+ mph, letting me know via sign language that I was #1 in his book.

Fast forward about 10-15 minutes.

I'm still puttering along about 30 mph because it's still icy. I see a vehicle off in the ditch, wheels up to the sky. It's a Ford Explorer. Yep, it's my buddy, standing knee deep in the snow in his nice suit yapping on his cell phone. I honked and waved, he let me know I was still #1.

Guy drives up to the roundabout in his Range Rover sport, obviously thinks he is brilliant with his £80k car and 4 wheel drive, goes around the corner at normal speed, the rear end steps out and the stability management clearly cuts in to take control of the situation, bloody idiot haha.

On the other hand, a nice Subaru Legacy b-spec takes the corner with ease.

Bwaaahahahahahahahaaa! Glad to see idiocy is still a universal human condition - and Sheila stop being so smug dammit! Just you potsmoking, skiboarding hippies wait....

Lol that's my take on it too...not to mention that when I have to hoik in 40lb bags of wood pellets for my stove, it's a helluva sight easier to do it on snowshoes than x-country skiis! Also, now I go hiking near the snowmobile club's trails. Not only do snowshoes not need wax or stuff like that, but they won't ruin the snowmobilers' tracks.

We're supposed to get 1-2 inches tonight. I'm hoping they're wrong and we get 1-2 FEET. *grin*

I had to go and pick up a new pump for my well yesterday and drove over a mountain pass here in Norway called "Suleskard". This crossing is only open in the summer time due to snow. The picture above shows what it looks like before the snow accumulates too much. I took this with a snapshot camera while driving so quality is not the best.

I drive this crossing twice per year and it is truly spectacular.

Edit: The township only bother to blow one of the lanes. This is also why we do something called "Convoy driving" over the mountain. We have to wait for a "follow me" truck that shows the way and drive one direction at the time since there otherwise is not enough place for meeting vehicles.

I should have shoveled my drive this morning (Munich). Had about 10cm of new snow over night. But I figured it would warm up during the day and melt it.

As for the SUV's ending up in the ditch. They have a big disadvantage because they mostly weigh loads more than a joe average car. They are fine accelerating or going in a straight line, but stopping or cornering despite their 4WD they are usually wored than other cars.
I have a 4WD that looks like a normal car. Is a little higher but not much heavier. Winter tyres also.

here's an interesting comparison.
the bottom pics of were taken in winter of 2006/07 during my stay in iceland, the top pics were taken and provided by my icelandic friend bjössi in the winter of 1995/06, he told me that was the craziest amount of snow he'd seen in his life, they had to dig a tunnel in order to get out and inside the house, plus he couldn't find his car for nearly 2 weeks because it was completely buried under the snow.
they luckily haven't had as much snow ever since.

The snow came and now is gone :( Having snow in Belgium is certainly a "rare" event.
But it sure was fun this weekend. I even had a snowman :)

ps: I miss the snow I used to have back in Romania
