Well I completely missed this one, being in hospital and all. I'm interested in being a part of it if I am wanted...

Everyone below this message who has asked to be apart of this should find their name in the new thread as discussion members. I as the OP will contact each of the users who own the photos via PM to make sure that they are ok with us analyzing their photos.

Maybe picking one from the bottom third, one from the middle and one from the top third would be helpful.

Something that didn't garner too much attention I think could generate much discussion and be a very good learning tool.

I think finding this image, that really connects strongly with a part of the voter base is worth study. Its not too hard to find if you voted in the challenge, or look through the results to see who had the most favs or comments after the challenge. Just a thought.

Good point. Looking at just the winners is not going to teach you that much. You have to look at much more.

It's important to understand that given the nature of the voting process (ex. the ADD tendencies to voting) and the high degree of emphasis placed on meeting the challenge theme, what you get often are winners that are cut from the same cloth. That is simple, clean, uncluttered imagery that can easily be processed and quickly communicate the challenge theme to voters of all temperament. The complex photo on the other hand, which could be just as good if not better and have more lasting appeal is always at a disadvantage because it cannot communicate the challenge theme quickly enough as something that has been built around just that and stripped of everything else. We basically reward the photos that have the least to say and that is not the receipe for great photography but it is for stock photography.

I think this discussion would be more enlightening if specific challenges as a whole were discussed and not just the winners but I'd be interested in whatever you guys do.

Hey Rich, is it to late to get in on this?
11/07/2008 08:04:19 PM · #15
The description in the new thread makes sense to me & I'd love to see it start right away.

I wonder, as a matter of etiquette, if PMs should be shot out to the owners of photos being considered for discussion just to make sure they don't mind the attention. The only reason I mention this is that the original idea seems to have been expanded to include photos at various levels and some folks at the middle or lower end of the challenge might not appreciate their shot being the subject of an autopsy. Of course, most DPCers would love such attention I suspect, but I'm not sure everyone would.

I have created another thread in the side challenge area of the site:

//www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=842215&page=1#5051348

Please let me know if the layout I have proposed works or we need to modify it a bit more, I really want this to work out for everyone in the thread and promote learning on the site.

I will keep it up on the site, I think we have enough people who are willing to participate if kept on the site to justify that, however please help me keep the thread as civil as possible so everyone can learn from it. I am going to close participation now and start a new thread for this. I am going to take describe better in that one the process and how we will choose the photos we will study. I am happy that there is so much interest in this subject.

I will post a link to the new thread once created I am going to put it into the side challenge thread.

Sixth (or maybe tenth) was my reaction -- the ones which just miss even an Honorable Mention.

I don't know how hard it's going to be to pick these out from the results. It also might be too many pictures, at least until we see how such a discussion would go, and whether it would be posted in the forum thread or the photos' discussion threads, or both.

No rationale, really. Figure the Blue usually gets discussed a bit in the comments; I suppose the Red does as well. Maybe 6th place instead? Just figured a top ten would be good to include.

I like that idea, Paul. If Rich still wants to start a group offline, that's cool, but I'd be happy to participate in one here. I also like Joe's idea of picking a shot that garners a lot of comments or favs during a challenge, but perhaps not a great score.

A suggestion: shots to discuss would be: the Red Ribbon, the closest to the 10th, 30th, 50th, 70th, and 90th percentiles as you mentioned, and the shot with the most comments during the challenge that didn't make the top 10.

If we add the last-place finisher we'll have 8 pictures in the pool -- I like using binary multiples when possible, :-)

What's the rationale for using the Red Ribbon winner?
