If there is also a freestudy and a speed challenge going on, a paying member could be in as many as 4 challenges at one time. I've decided to normally limit myself to one of the normal challenges per week, unless I just have two good ideas or shots that happened to fit.

LadyTara,

From what I have learnt, a paying member can enter only ONE of the open exclusive challenges (same as free members), along with the members only challenges.

Peter, correct me if thats not the case...

My deepest apologies. I first wrote on this thread, because it was relevant here, then I thought I can suggest this to be changed, so wrote in the suggestions forum.

This forum is great.. I got an answer within 5 minutes:-)

That's not the case is it? I think there are 2 open challenges a week and I am not aware of a 1 entry per week rule - although I could be wrong.

Registered users can enter one of the two exclusive open challenges each week. Exclusive in this context means either one or the other.

Personally, I find the fact that you can enter challenges and get critique and comment without paying anything a great deal.

Like that credit card company said, membership has its privledges...

Ahh right I see, Hmmm wasn't aware of that, I know to many the membership fee is not a great deal of money especially when spread over a year, but it might be an idea to have an intermediate membership of say $7.50 per year which would just allow entry to both the open challenges each month which might be more accessible to those that may struggle with the full membership rate...

Just my 0.2

EDIT: For Spelling mistakes LOL

Mark,

I have tried submitting to both open challenges, but as I come to the submission screen of teh second one, I see a note saying I must first unsubmit from the first challenge if I wish to submit to the second one. :-(

Hand puppets aren't quite the same as dolls. A hand puppet is a hand puppet, by name and nature you can't deny their puppetry, so an animal one would suffice and still meet criteria. I just personally think that a doll should be human-like.

Yes the same thing confused me. I dont have kids yet, so all I have at home are soft toys (my wife's gifts) or figurines. I was about to submit one of two pics I took last week, but then I decided to take a third one and submit to the overexposed challenge instead (its kind of sad that free members can ONLY submit to one challenge a week).

Heres an intermediate one of the two I was contemplating to submit to Dolls challenge:

Probably would have been a DNMC (or would it? What do you think?) :-)

Anyways I am glad I didnt.

I thought there would've been a lot more entries in the challenge but we're only at 69. Oh dear, means there's less to compete against and I'm almost definitely getting a brown ribbon! Ah well, my picture is more for me anyway really. Roll on 5am.

I don't think a stuffed toy is a doll unless it is in the likeness of a person, not an animal. I feel the same way about action figures, people-figures are dolls in my book, just not animals or creatures.

If you ask me, I would say yes. But different people might have different opinions. Please refer to the dictionary definition that I posted earlier in this thread if you want more clarification (or confusion ;-).

I'm having a bit of a dilemma with the Dolls and Puppets challenge, mostly because in my couple of months since joining DPchallenge, I've seen what the voters like and what they seem not to like.

I've taken a photo for it which personally, I very much like and would like to share. Only thing is, it isn't what the DP community tends to like (from my experience thus far) so I'd pretty much be setting myself up for the bottom rung position on the ladder, I believe.

I'm not quite sure what to do; submit it because I really like it and possibly subject myself to having a lot of people burst my bubble, or leave it out and submit a different photo I think the DPers would like more, even if it doesn't 'pop' as much for me personally.

Argh.

May I suggest one way out?

Ask yourself what is more important for you:

[1] A creation that you like and that gives you pleasure when you look at it,

OR,

[2] The thrill that a 100 endorsements would give you for a creation that you dont like as much.

Thrill in a moment, or awe in a spirit? :-)

On the other hand, being here on DPC is surely a proof of the approval we need from kins or fellows.. it feels great if others appreciate our work. But nothing would beat the feeling when fellows also like what you liked. That would be rare I guess.. not everyone would like the same thing IMHO.

As for me, I would prefer these three in this order:

(a) make all of us happy (my picture is what I loved and others may like too)
(b) make myself happy (my picture is what I loved)
(c) make others happy (my picture is what others may love)

However, this is not what happens in reality, since I cant predict what others would like.. and even if I did, I wouldnt change my core likings for that. So in reality, it is going be more like this (in that order):

(a) make myself happy (my picture is what I loved, I dont know about others, why bother?)
(b) make all of us happy (my picture is what I loved and others may like too, but I dont know about others)
(c) make others happy (my picture is what others may love based on a guess.. this would be to get a thrill one gets from a mass support)

Well, as much as I love the picture and the feelings it gives to me personally (which is important, yes) I also would like to share something with DP that others would be able to enjoy too. I don't think I'd achieve that with this picture, which comes back to my dilemma; do I keep it to myself as a solitary joy or do I submit it and hope my joy isn't dashed by the majority of people disliking it.

I'm going to see how I feel about it once I've compared it to my other option, I think.

Reminds me of a debate on a popular show: does sharing joy always make one happy? If I am about to share my joy, and still worry about whether others would feel the same joy or not, I am actually decreasing the feeling of joy; when in fact it should multiply when shared:-)

Go ahead and put it out there I would say...

I may well do, though while I like it I still seriously doubt that others will.

I say submit it, unless it is has sentimental meaning and it would really be hurtful to you if it got slammed with low scores. You also have to sometimes interpret the scores. For instance my current entry is hovering at about a 4.5 and it is getting slammed with 1's 2'2 and 3's. The handful of high votes are all that is keeping it that high. It has had 3 comments, none which criticize the image itself or point out how I could have improved it. That suggests to me that it is likley a good shot that it getting hammered by people feeling it does not meet the challenge. From the pre-challenge discussion on the topic, I expected this to happen and in spite of my grousing in the score thread a little, I am really ok with it.

It's the same thing with abstracts. They almost always score low, unless the challenge is specifically an abstract challenge. LPatrickrecieved a very low score for this entry in the purple challenge, however he knew it would do so.

He also got some awesome comments from people who did like it and received some encouragement to continue to do these things in spite of that. Sometimes it means more to appeal to a few people.

It's not the end of the world if I get a low score, true, I suppose I do find it difficult though to be told that something I really like isn't any good. Thank you for the comparison on that minimalist pic though, I can see why he felt it wouldn't do well since it's not the norm around here, though I for one loved it. I think at this point I'm leaning towards just submitting it :)
