Ok, I'm going to NY this weekend and buying a D200... or an S5... no! no! a D200. Thanks All. There was a day when I checked on the latest stat of the newest camera the hour it came out. But since I've been out of the profession, I have not paid much attention since 2005.
Thanks for giving me suggestions and peace-of-mind!

Stick with Fuji and get the Fuji S5 Pro it is a fantastic bit of kit

It depends quite a bit of what you are looking for. If you mostly shoot between 100-800 ISO, a fast, comfortable and robust body, I think the best choice is the D200 (you will probably have the best handling for the price). The D80 is fine also, but I believe that the D200 gives more freedom, and the metering system is better as well.
As far as I am concerned, I have been extremely happy with the D200. The gap D70 > D200 and D100 > D200 were huge. The gaps D80 > D200 and D200 > D300 were not so huge IMO. If you are looking for a camera, which can produce decent (but not fantastic) pictures in high ISO setting, the D300 is probably as good as it can get with APS-C sensors.

Not a bad suggestion. I was torn between the D80 and the D200, but decided to treat myself. If $1000 is as high as you can go, then this seems like a good idea.

i've seen used D300 already for 1500$
..it's not that much of a stretch ..
skip over the D80 / either jump for the D300 orrrrr D200 (IMO)

To get this back on topic.....considering you like Nikons (blah), if you like to play with IR, then keep this in mind when looking for the right body for you.

I have $1000.00 to buy a D-SLR.
Over the years I have collected hundreds and hundreds of dollars in Nikkor lenses.
If your wife gave you $1000 and you could get any new or used f-mount camera what would you get?
I'm no longer a full time pro-photographer. I do mostly travel photography now and I probably won't get another allowance for 5 years, so it still needs to be kinda durrable. |
