You're not allowed to use selection tools.

But you are allowed to use the selective color adjustment layer. That's what he meant by "selective color adjustments." Either that, or the shot will be DQd during validation.

That adjustment layer is named a bit confusingly for purposes of DPC rules. But what it does is "whole image" editing. Specifically, it changes every pixel of a certain color you choose in a dropdown box in the same way. It's the same as using a levels or curves adjustment layer, which affects every pixel of a certain brightness or color channel in the same way.

I find the most useful way to use it is to add more black to the blacks, but it's also useful to make other changes.

As for you thinking there's no red to enhance, I disagree. You'd be amazed at what colors lurk in your pictures if you push things to an extreme. In my Wealth entry, for instance, the brilliant pink in the lower left was a barely visible smudge in the original:

AP describes using selective color adjustments to create the red color to get the hot appearance to meet the challenge. I was under the impression that this was against the rules for a basic editing challenge. Or perhaps I am just not understanding how this was accomplished using the normal PS tools. Anyone able to help clear this up.

I think the shot looked great

Again appologies to AP for even asking this question but I am very confused.

I'm just trying to better understand how the rules are applied and what is allowed under the editing rules.

You can use selective color adjustments because it applies to the whole image. Just tweak the saturation and hue and you can change the color of the sky.

No wonder I scored so poorly. I entered the wrong challenge. ;)

Congratulations to all ribbon holders from the cold and hot challenges challenges. I note that cold were placed by women and hot by men. A battle of the sexes challenge may be due. Great shots all around by all posters.
