You can buy a really nice used D200 for about 750 bucks now. I did.
Now the D70 is only worth maybe 350 bucks.

Let some one else take the hit, find a nice used D200.

Personally I would wait and see if you can save up the remainder for the D300. I would have waited a good while to get the D300 if my P&S G2 didn't die on me. If you already have a good functioning Nikon then the pressure to buy right this second shouldn't be too bad.

Also remember, the price of the D300 might drop soon thanks to the D700, a lot of people are going to be upgrading for that full-frame imo.

You can never too many features. Funny, the last couple of days my Boss (wife) keeps asking what camera I have been looking at and wanting. Could it be too much to hope?

Ah, I see. I thought you meant features wise.

I too was hoping for a new DX body. FF would be cool but I just bought a nice 70-200 VR and it performs alot better on DX so I'll stick with it for now. I'd probably miss the longer range too anyways so yeah.... hopefully Nikon comes up with a new DX upgrade soon.

The word was that Nikon would announce a couple bodies... Turns out it was only the D700. Who knows, perhaps we'll see more in the coming days. If not, there's always... What's it called, Photokina? in September. That'd be a likely time to see an upgrade. The only issue with that is is it's 2 months away and it probably wouldn't be available until a few months afterwords...

Anyways, a D200 is a GREAT camera. Unless you're planning on keeping the D70 as a backup body or infrared body or something, you could probably get a D200 for only $400-$500 if you cash in the D70.

Otherwise... Save up your pennies! The D300 is an amazing camera.
