I like to think of it as springboarding off of another''s ideas. I desperately need a starting point for creativity. After that I can sometimes (with luck) get things going. Collectively, you guys offer tremendous inspiration. Even with shots that I don''t think worked out so well I see creativity and fresh ideas.

If someone tries to throw the old "thats a ripoff" or "that's a cliche" then it just mean's they are too stupid or limited in experience to have seen enough of the world to know that there is very little that has not been done in some form.
It's YOUR attempt that makes it special and any voter or other photographer that can't see that doesn't influence me. |

They do say that imitation is the greates form of flattery ...
My entry for 'From The Ground Up' was definitely inspired by other photos. Not a single one, but just a bunch of different ones that showed non-typical perspectives of flowers.

I found a picture yesterday that I decided to try and imitate for "shadows." I tried it; couldn''t do it, BUT then I said, "well, let''s try this, and this, and this, and this." Sometimes, it helps me to see others'' stuff, and try it, just as a learning experience. The biggest danger in me copying someone else''s stuff is the offense they feel when they see how bad it is. :-)

I don't believe I would be offended by a poor attempt to create anyting i have done... I would be more offended if the recreation was better :)

Who cares if a photos is a ripoff, a cliche, one of twenty or more of the same subject, black and white when you wanted to see it in color or vice versa, and any number of excuses to complain about a photo or try to get a dig in.
Just look at a photo and accept it for what it is at that moment on it's own as if it were the only photo ever made or ever to be made. Singular.

Trying to duplicate my own shots is a pain in the arse... lol.. with FOLIAGE, I ended up using one of my so called 'prototype' photos because I couldnt' get a 'final version' photo that was as good as my prototypes...

I agree with magnetic there jm...quite a bit of your stuff is creative.
You make it sound like ripping folks off is easy or unaccepted.
First, try to recreate one of your favorite photos you have already taken. I bet it takes you 50 shots to get even CLOSE to being happy with the lighting, angle and composition of the original. And that is with knowing EXACTLEY how the shot was made. Try to duplicate other folks work with a different camera, equipment, props or subject, etc. Damn near impossible unless you are a professional and if you are that much of a pro why you hangin out here. ;-)
Besides, being inspired by other ideas is the essence of art anyway. Every great artist has had his mentor and even spent a lot of his study trying to replicate that work. I haven't became good enough with my camera yet to try ripping off because I don't need the frustration :-) |

must be that 'Foliage' you have around the house .. ; )
The FOLIAGE photo was my LEAST creative photo effort in a long time... It is my direct attempt at a copy of a photo that I saw recently... I was going to try to link to it but the site that is hosting that photo is down. "FOLIAGE" is a complete ripoff of someone else's idea. I just wanted to see if I could do it myself.. When that site comes back up, I will link to the photo that I was trying to duplicate...

There should be some very interesting shots.

Yeah, I had been thinking about a white on white for a while. I have a Cockatoo Parrot and she is all white. The yellow you see on her feather is hidden unless she completely unfolds her feathers for flight. I just haven't got around to it but here feathers make neat props. :-) Hard part about white is getting that beautiful white background without blowing out the photo or losing the 3 dimensionality of the subject.
Tthe feather shot I figured was too simple for this challenge. I liked it and I am glad I took that shot but I have several other options that are more technically interesting.
The blob stuff is my daughters Lava lamp. I thought people would hate those photos because they are so dark and I have found that abstracts are not recieved too well around here anyway :-) |
