Hello Rooster,

I think that a portrait is a picture where you can see that the person on it is the subject. Nothing more nothing less. For example, look at the pictures of Anton Corbijn. Her is an examlple //www.middelbosch.com/costello.jpg

I`ve never tried a serious attempt at portraiture and thought long and hard about whether to submit for this..finally,I decided to go ahead on the basis that if I don`t..then what am I going to learn ?

Took me forever to decide between two images..one conventional..the other slightly different...in for a penny..in for a pound as we say over here, I`ve gone for the experimental one..I`ve got a feeling I won`t be short of comments..but I`ll certainly learn something from this.

Thanks for that link to Paige's work Fadoi.

I think this is a marvellous, unconventional portrait:

Brilliant? I was very pleased with it and it seemed to touch a few people deeply but it could certainly never be classed as brilliant or even very good. Bold? It was hard to enter it, I almost chickened out, so it certainly felt bold to me but there have been many many bolder entries over the time I've been a participant here.

You are welcome to view my profile to view the image if it interests you and to add any comment to it should you wish.

Good luck with your entry for this upcoming challenge.

Sounds like it was brilliant & bold. What am I aiming at? I think a bit of all that you offered up. Mostly, I want it to express a feeling. I think the tight crop kinda takes away from that. THe widest crop is the one I really want to use but I think I will go with something in between.
We'll see what happens!

Depends on the model. Check out some of Paiges' photos. Some great emotion from the close crop.

Wide or tight shot, who cares as long as it's a good shot and you had fun shooting it.

Although, as the challenge description says, a portrait typically captures the face of a person, it doesn't always and nor does it always need to.

As far as I am concerned a portrait should convey something about the subject - about their personality, about their behaviour, about their inner feelings, about their thoughts.

I entered an image with no face at all (shock, horror) into the self-portrait challenge last year.

I knew I'd receive some low votes because people didn't appreciate the nudity and I knew I'd receive some low votes because my image didn't match some peoples' defintion of "portrait" and that's OK. They are all entitled to their opinion.

But most of the comments I received really made me feel that I made the right decision in entering it because they showed that a few people did get what the image was about and why I felt it to be appropriate for a portrait challenge.

I intend to keep an open mind during voting and I hope others do the same.

Rooster, in answer to your question, you'll likely find that most people feel that, as long as your image contains a face, it's a portrait but that a few feel that only head and shoulders shots fit the bill. Decide what your aim is (scoring highly, getting feedback on the shot you like the best, improving your skills in traditional portraiture) and enter accordingly!

And GOOD LUCK!

(PS I haven't entered).

When I saw what the challenge was, I thought it wasn't for me, but I have entered. I know this one isn't going to score well, but I like it and hopefully one or two voters will too.

Holy Crap! That is so awesome! I'm still brooding over which shot/crop I should use. The voting could be rigid or loose. One nevers knows.

I'm hoping that there won't be TOO much of obsessive paying attention to the use of the word "face" in the challenge description.

A portrait is fundamentally capturing a person - yes, traditionally just the face but not exclusively.

Not saying anything about my own entry, mind ;-)

Thanks GM. And while I know what the traditional def. is for portraits, I am really interested in getting a consensus on whether there is some variation that folks are willing to consider as portraits & fitting the challenge if the shot is a bit wider to include the upper body as well.
Any further thoughts would be appreciated!

DO you think that there will be one? Already a free study challenge. Seems unlikely that there would a speed challenge this month.

How come you've been out of the game for so long?

Yeah, that's what I figured. But the shot I want to use I think is too wide of a crop. Guess I gotta go back check things over. This is the part of the challenge I hate the most... choosing a pic!

I think most people would find it to meet the challenge if the main focus is on the face. So the more of the face is shown in the picture you should be fine.

Hey Welland!

I knew you'd come thru!
Well, yes, a shot like that but with a wider crop.
It's wierd, I was just gonna post that shot.
THanks!

I wish I could give an axample but I don;t have one right now. Any help would be good at this point as I struggle to shoose a good shot for the challenge.

You mean a pose like:

I would consider it a portrait. Of course, a possible "10" from one person doesn't make a difference if 100 people gives you a "1". So you may want to get a consesus first.
