I have two 580EX II and they are great, even though I have only used one. One of them I have not even opened the box. I don't have any experience with other flashes other than the on-board flash but I can honestly say the 580EX II is a great flash. Powerful, weather sealed, and endless features.

Power and features are the main reason that the 580EX is ten times the price of the phoenix. It can use ETTL2 auto exposure, function as a wireless master unit, and has much more power. It's also probably much better built than the Phoenix is. It will also have a LCD screen, more steps for reducing the power, tilt/swivel head, etc... The list really just goes on and on. The only one comparable to the 580EX is the Sigma Super since it's the off brand version of the Canon and nearly identical.

The canon will have many more options, I would guess more power and the wireless slave capabilites with other canon flashes. These are probably just the tip of the iceberg as I do not know much about the non canon flash you are inquiring about.

Suggestion:

Get the specs for all the flashes you're considering and compare them. Then determine which features you want/need. This may eliminate the cheaper flashes in your list.

Why not try diffusing the light of the popup flash to see what kind of results you get. You may decide it's all you need. A ping pong ball can be used as a diffuser, just make sure there's a hole for the heat to escape. A semi-transparent white film canister works for a diffuser as well.

No responses and it flew off the main screen pretty quickly so I thought I'd bump it back up.

I apologize in advance for posting a question that has been posted many times before, but I can't seem to find the answer using the dpchallenge search.

I've become unsatisfied with the pop-up flash on my new 40D, especially when taking pictures of people - it's too harsh. My first thought was to get a diffuser, but I've decided I should probably get a flash that hooks into the hotshoe. I will mostly be using this in situations where it's too dark without a flash, but the pop-up is too harsh/creates redeye, etc. I will rarely try to use this flash to illuminate something that the pop-up is not strong enough to illuminate. Clearly the Speedlights are good flashes, but there are so many cheaper flashes out there... I don't have a hard and fast budget for this, but I want to get good value for my money. Below are some prices I randomly pulled from Amazon... can someone tell me what, for instance, makes the Speedlite 580EX II ten times better than the Phoenix D92-BZS? And how any of the others compare?

Phoenix D92-BZS $39.95
Bower SF5000 $72.50
Sunpak PZ40X II $162.78
Sigma EF-530 DG ST $189.00
Canon 430EX $250.98
Sigma EF-530 DG Super $259.00
Canon Speedlite 580EX II $399.00

Thank you in advance!
