I don't think I will suffer from any "cliche" remarks this week (not that I usually do, but we seem to talk about it a lot!), hope creativity will provoke comments instead.

Finally got everything rigged up and ready to go 'on the road' when it started raining. {gloom} Might have to make this a night shot with flash if it doesn't let up soon, which probably means more B/W for those of you who haven't had enough.

Nice one Amphian. This is a great site, great photos and an important message. Looking by the amount of submits so far (62), I suspect that this weeks challenge as been more difficult than expected. I know I struggled. I will certainly give each entry a fairer chance after reading that site. Cheers.

Ouch! There is an interesting essay on shooting cliches (along with some great photos) at Luminous Landscape.

BTW- I don't consider 'cliche' when i vote... I think that a well-executed shot that I consider to be 'cliche' will score well regardless :)

Notes on 'cliche':

I see you have been a member since today... welcome!
The "On the Road" voting doesn't begin until (after midnight?) on Sunday...so, you'll have to wait until Monday morning your time (or there about) to see if it will get "cliche" remarks. :-p

Do I really have to be the 1st time forum user here? Yep, Just want to say that I am very excited about this site and all of the creative inspiration that you all have shown me. I have been a digital "geek" for a couple of years now and only until recently have really gotten into photography. Maybe because after the initial investments (which can be a killer) everything else is pretty much free! So all I can say is keep all of the submissions coming so I can learn and be awed by at the same time. One day, I will be as good as you.

By the way, my 1st submission really exemplifies the way I want to start out in this field, SLOW..... ;)

I only see 53 entries so far, is everyone waiting till tomorrow?

For me, it's not really how much I learn from this site that matters as much as being excited by the things other people see and photograph, and how they feel like photographing them. I don't look at them as "art", because they're the creative expression of people who generally wouldn't call themselves artists at all. You very rarely get much insight into the way the ordinary people around you see and appreciate the world, but here we get it in spades, and it's often very revealing and intriguing.

Then again, it's often just cats, dogs, flowers, babies and pretty girls... but some people find qualities in those subjects that still captivate me :) A few of those are even in my 10s this week!

All I know is, I cannot wait to see all the photos of all the new people on this site.

As your portfolio builds here we will learn more about you than anything you possibly can say..thats the fun part to watch. :-)

so, i'm trying to understand this: i'm getting the impression a lot of people are relying on "the element of surprise". : )

That's already happened to me. I wanted to do something subtle in one of my shots, and I'm afraid that now that it's been mentioned (I won't say where or in what thread) it may seem cheesy.

I've seen a lot of boring pictures of roadkill, accidents and classic cars.

Mostly, I've seen a lot of poorly concieved, poorly executed images passed off as "art". I am speaking about images in general without regard to where or when I've seen them.

One general observation I will make about the images I've seen on this site since joining; there is a lot of talk in the forums about art and artistic expression, while the majority of the images in the challenge galleries exhibit photographic craft that is beyond the norm expected by today's automatic cameras. Few exhibit image quality that exemplifies a craftsman like knowledge of digital darkroom methods.

IMO this is a great site for helping one another experiment with image capture and post processing techniques to improve our skills. If there is one image in a challenge that comes even close to "display" standards, we collectively are lucky and should then spend time studying that image to learn from it and the photographer who made the image.

i think for this challenge, were i not suspended, i would have submitted one of the following:

roadkill. this is painfully cliche, but could be interesting if there were flies and it was a long exposure shot.

a car accident. these are hard to come by, unless you have a female friend who will run naked in the street for twenty bucks. she wouldn't be in the picture.

a really old classic car with someone no younger than 70 years of age putt-putting along at 15 mph. with a corn cob pipe in hand. hell yes.

who knows what kind of boring crap people will try and dress up for this one.

No, I personally don't see anything wrong with it. It's fun to bounce around ideas. I thought that was all we were doing.

does anyone really think that typing the words 'car accident' on here will suddenly somehow make your photograph any less compelling or lame then it already was going to be? :)
