Isn't it Freedonia?

I'd the best choice is Australia, though. ;-)

My dream is to retire at 55 to Paris and live there. Maybe even become a citizen.

Personally I have to make a choice of any place other than india (off course everyone likes his motherland) Australia would be my choice. I have met many Australians and they are the best people I have met. Without any doubt.

Growing up my dad always wanted to move us to Australia.

I have a good friend in New Zealand that just loves it. I also love the New Zealanders accents... although I dont know if I can handle it being summer at Christmas!

I lived in S. Korea for 2 years, wouldnt live there voluntarily again, although I would visit. My husband and I were married there, in Seoul.

I am in the fortunate position where really, I can move anywhere if I wished to do that. However, I'm still in Campbellville, Ontario, Canada - hard to find the right place ;) I want a place that:
- it's safe
One of the lowest crime rates in europe

- has an ocean and decent mountains within driving distance
The oceans and Mountains are the selling point!!

- has places for sailing, scuba diving, and of course, for great photos
Excellent sailing, scuba diving too but no coral reefs and such, but lots of shipwrecks and ancient ruins (the govt just allowed scuba diving pretty much anywhere)

- it's not too hot, not too cold, not too windy - except when sailing ;)
Definately not too cold, maybe too hot in the summer (can reach 40 degrees at really bad days), very very low humidity. It can get windy in august, some parts of the country are windy all the time - agean especially.

- has no mosquitos! - that's a bit hard, I know
Hmmm...there are mosquitos, but not nearly as many as i had encountered in Ontario one summer. (no mosquito swarms, just the ocassional annoying bugger that might keep you up at night)

- has good schools (in English... Japanese won't do!)
The american community school of Athens is a great K-12 school, with a very hgh rate of attending good universities. Theres 2 other American schools, a french, german, British, and even arabic one

- tolerates foreigners
Foreigners are all over the place, but Greeks like to speak their mind, so you might get into heated debates about your countries politics at any given moment!

- it's not a big city
Athens is huge 5 million, but Thessaloniki is about 800.000 and also has american schools. And from there on there are towns from 10 ppl to 300.000

- has lots of sunny days
finding cloudy days might be difficult!

Is that a serious question? If yes, then there's many factors to consider:
- security
- proximity to friends and family
- medical care
- schools (if applicable)
- cost of living
- weather
- the family members that would go with you (do they want to move?)
- language barrier
- do you like the ocean, the mountain, warm, cold, snow, sand, wind?
- social life

Sounds a bit like British Columbia but not Vancouver, too rainy!

yes, it's a serious question in order to get ideas. There are so many people here from all over and many have seen several places who could offer great insight. I've lived in many parts of the US and lived 3 years in Germany and visited a few western European countries. I've wanted to visit eastern Europe, poland, ukraine, czech, and russia. Also very interested in the uk. Even considered teaching english (esl) to get the opportunity to "practice" living in other places. Also would like to see canada west and east coasts. Also down-under has interested me.

I'm tempted to go minimalist/survivalist pretty soon. There's no getting ahead.

So Slippy is considering going either Aboriginal or Maori then, eh? ;)

Did you learn Japanese? I speak at the level of a 5 year old, and it has enhanced my experience 10 fold since i first got here.

As for saying Japanese are liars, well that is just wrong. Maybe you interepreted the social rules as lying? When i show japanese people a really bad photo, they will still say "Wow that is soo good!", but that is just them being overly polite, not liars!

I think i just spoiled the thread.

Well I respect your experience thats all I could say.
Lets get back to topic.

This is very true, there are good and bad at every place. This is what I used to tell my wife, when we moved here in japan.
But for me one thing is for sure I will never miss a single thing about japan. Probably because I have grown up in india and particularly in rajasthan (a state). The level of friendliness we have, I can not expect that from any place.

There are good things about japan too, specially their system, which is efficient. And the efforts they put in work. They are hardworking people. And it amaze me how much efforts they put just for their office.

Be happy wherever you are..... it might be the best in the long run.

I have lived in Germany, NZ, Australia and the US, plus I have had extended stays in Italy (and visited several other countries).

By now, I am so confused that I wouldn't know where to live anymore if I had the choice. Actually, if I had a money tree, I'd own at least a dozen different homes, and I'd just keep moving around between them.

No matter where you live, there is good and bad. There will always be things you miss about the other places. Once you leave home, you never totally have a home anymore.

Just make the most of it...... strive to be happy with what you have.

Japan, hands down. I lived there for 4 years and there's not a day that goes by that i don't think of that place. I was in a city called Ebina, its only 45 min from tokyo, great people, great food, convience and lots of things to see and do.

I have similar thinking about portugal. Lived in lisbon for 2 years and still attached to it. Still call people there. Very nice people.

you must be near tokyo, because last week I was talking with a japanese. He told me that the attitude of people in tokyo area is very different. They are more upfront and truthful. Lying and artificial attitude is prevalent only around kansai area.
Anyway I find it very hard to believe japanese person. Whenever a japanese says something to me, first thing that comes to mind is he must be lying.
I hate liars and dishonestly. I do not think I will ever like japanese for this reason.

Where you live is the best place in the world man. Sounthern California Rules..

The wildfires are great photojournalistic opportunitics and the earthquakes help your improve your handholding camera ability. What's not to like?

I moved to New Zealand for a little while a few years back, and while it was everything I had hoped for and more, after I realized the best place in the world is where the people most important to you are. Even if they have no beautiful beaches temperate rainforests or alpine trails ... though I do miss surfing.
