I almost always have trouble deciding whether my photos look better in color or black and white. I know there's not hard and fast rule, but, for instance, which of these do you like better?
Does anyone have any tips for deciding whether color or b&w is better for a given photo? |

I way I decide is that if there is colors or objects in the picture that detract from the main subject, then I go b/w or maybe even selective desat (if that's an option). Also what "feeling" you are trying to convene with the image.
Given that, I think the b/w is better in your example because of the lamp and framed images behind the subject. First thought was selctive desat to leave her colorized but after studing it for a minute I think a total b/w is best.
I know you didn't ask but is there any way to crop this a bit tighter to remove some of the extra stuff? Just gave it a small shot here...

I know there are "rules" about cutting heads and limbs off but this was just a test shot.

I don't mind your crop at all, sab, thanks. I know there are probably better framings, etc. I just happened to have that photo handy (was playing with my new camera) so I used it as an example for the color/BW question. |
