Though if you can plan it out, it'd be cheaper still to order from B&H (//www.bhphotovideo.com/) and have it shipped to SF while you're there. That way you'd avoid paying sales tax.

I was curious if this would work, or if it B&H would look at the billing address to see where the buyer lives and charge the taxes applicable to that country, rather than where it is shipped to? Is this thinking wrong?

It's thinking right. Find the right buyer =)

I will be visiting San Francisco for a few days in Mid Jan 08 ( I know it’s some way ahead but I like to plan )

I want to take up the opportunity of much lower prices in the US compared with the UK and the favourable exchange rate, to upgrade some of my camera equipment – tripod, head, external battery power for flash.

I am looking for a good store in San Francisco where I can order these from the UK but collect locally when I arrive. I have Googled photography stores and found quite a few, so wondered if any locals had some recommendations…

Calumet, SF -

K&S, Palo Alto -

San Jose Camera, San Jose -

But if you're going to the store to play with everything, then support the locals =)

Socal yes. SF no.

Could try getting the hotel to accept a FedEx delivery??? Then it's on for anyone that can deliver at the right time :-)

Adolph Gasser's is a rabbit warren of a place with all sorts of equipment, may be a tad pricy.

A very well known, nationwide store, that has a store in San Francisco, Calumet is where I go for most of my local stuff.

Looking Glass Photo I go here the most if I don't get something online. They are really helpful and have used gear available like tripods and heads. I don't know about the external battery for flash but they could probably order it. I bought a circular polarizer and it was the wrong size and I had lost my receipt. I needed the next size up and they exchanged it for me no problem. You could call them and they will tell you what used stuff they have in stock and would probably set it aside for you.
EDIT: This store is in Berkeley and not SF. But you can get there pretty easy by using the BART public transit system.

Here's a list of camera dealers in San Francisco.

The larger, more reputable (arguably) ones are Ritz Camera and Wolf Camera. I believe they are of the same parent company.
