I am so jealous Skip! I love that picture, but of course, I love Richmond! Where exactly were you when you shot that pic?

We never use online listings for phone numbers - the thought never even crossed my mind. Our phonebook gets used quite frequently. :)

That's pretty cool - congrats.

I do have to admit though thinking while reading this 'wow, people still use phonebooks ???' That no doubt reflects on me, more than on your success with this though :) Ours gets recycled as soon as it arrives.

Skip, I can't even remember the last time that I was on this website but I was referring someone here for practice and was checking the link, then what do I see.... this thread!

Congrats man! Screw the publication numbers man, just knowing that everyone in the city... every household, every hotel room... EVERYONE will have a copy of your photo is a great feeling!

CONGRATS!

Congrats! That'll be a great tearsheet to show clients and put on your website, and people might remember your name if they read the credit on the photo.

The phonebooks here usually have photos of San Juan College on the covers, which I attend; it's a local landmark and the architects put a lot of thought into the design so it's beautiful. I got a shot of the July 4th fireworks display behind to the clock tower, so I'm going to have it drum scanned and offer it to them and the college too.

I have to ask though, if it took so much editing, what was wrong with the original? Do you need to invest in some filters or something if the out-of-camera files are that unacceptable for print?

Did you get paid for the photo, or is it considered a "front page ad" since your contact info is on the cover as well? I would imagine a 1.1 circulation would fetch a pretty penny...
07/10/2007 11:28:02 PM · #10
thank you all!!!

you can do this, too! first, look at your current phonebook and the photo on it. look at other phonebooks. you get an idea as to the type of photos they're looking for. contact the phonebook companies and find out how to submit your photo for consideration. or, put the photos in a page on a website where the image can be found by google. remember, this is how chevrolet found alanfreed's pnc photos. keep in mind, it's really not a matter of money, it's a matter of visibility. after talking with the people at verizon, i got the feeling that most photographers they talked to were so concerned about the immediate money that they lost sight of the long run potential.

----

here's the funny part ;-) one of the odd jobs i had a LONG, LONG, LONG time ago was...selling phonebook covers! ay-yi-yi, the horrors, that my photo could potentially get covered up by one of those god-awful ugly yellow plastic sleeves...

I think you just had your saying yankod out from under you.

Edit to add: Congrats Skip! Great photo and I can see why Verizon wanted it... it's a great representation of Richmond!

Around my part of the country, "Johnny on the Spot" is a company that rents portable toilets (the type you see at construction sites, carnivals, etc).

Well done Skip!

What a cool thing - Phone books are used by many and over a long period of time - EXCELLENT!

And of course WELL DONE Brad - to one of the nicest guys on this site!

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Congratulations first, Skip, on getting a great image and second, having it at the right spot at the right time.

This is another plus for DPC and the terrific friendships generated not only by regular site use, but by the DPL teams. Your F/ate guy came through for you - and you knew where to go for help!

So maybe, congratulations go to Skip, Brad, DPC, and F/ate.

And kudos to Brad for stepping in to help a friend in need.

That is so cool Skip! Congratulations!

And, perfect timing for this thread. Someone mailed me today with the question of using one of my photos on a college-brochure. I had some questions I wanted to ask here, but they're answered now.

WOOOO!
