He's doing weddings, not funerals!

FYI, When I was shooting weddings regularly I always wore a white shirt, tie, dress pants and velvet waistcoat, as did the partner in the business. We also had tasteful single breasted tweed jackets, that we'd had extra pockets sewn into to hold batteries, filters, film etc. (Damn shame I'm a bit too, er, 'round' now! That was a great jacket!)

I don't do many weddings now, but doing corporate events etc I always dress 'professionally'. Always dress pants, polished black shoes, white shirt, tie and waistcoat. Some times I might whip off my tie and roll up my sleeves, but if you turn up to an event wearing an embroidered polo, you can't really change it up to match the room when you discover it's a black tie event!

Sometimes it's obvious from the wedding plan that you'll look 'silly' dressed up, but it's still important to look like you're there to do a professional, competent job, not clean the pool.

Being 'discrete' at a wedding is also a bit of a joke IMHO. Generally you're the one lugging two or three cameras around, sneaking around the back of the church, and the bossing everyone around if they want formal portraits. Unless you're a 'sniper' you're going to be very visible, you might as well look like you're worth the fee you're charging!

On the other hand, if you're charging $10 for a wedding, wear an old tee-shirt, cut-off jeans and bare feet!

Cheers, Me.

Depending on your style, maybe you don't want to blend-
But I've found that blending works best, and you are able to get those nice candids without people even knowing you're shooting them...
Plus Slacks and a nice shirt never goes out of style and will always look professional ;-)

I say, save the logos for corporate events or working in the studio.

I'd say to wear a suit for the wedding, or at least dress slacks and a dress shirt and tie. Personally, I've always worn a suit to typical wedding (though I usually would ditch the jacket after the ceremony) unless conditions dictated otherwise.

You can always dress down a suit by taking off the coat and/or tie.

Basically im gonna say ditto to the posts above:

I would think it would be best to "blend in" as much as possible, so you can get people relaxed and having a good time, instead of cheesing for the camera.

On the other hand though, after meeting with the couple a few times before their wedding, at that poitn you should have a pretty solid idea of what its going to be like - a suit for a beach wedding would just be silly.

Last time I was at a wedding for my family I was really surprised at what people consider 'formal' wear. Had I dressed what I felt was appropriate for a wedding and had I been there as a photographer, I most certainly would not have blended in.

As it was, it was OK to stick out a bit because my sister and I were both there and she is my dance partner, so it was fun to get up and get the dance floor movin' a bit with some lindyhop. (this was a few years back, not too sure how popular swing is these days)

Point is though I think it's appropriate to dress formally and nicely, simple colors without anything really bold usually works well. Black pants and a pastel colored dress shirt with a tie and a jacket when you show up is probably best from my point of view. Can lose the tie and unbutton the top button if people around you are wearing less formal clothing, but I don't think I would do a wedding shoot in anything less. that's just professionalism.

I've always heard you should blend in at a wedding, dress to the level that the guests will be dressed. Perhaps a very casual outdoor wedding would be appropriate for logo-wear, but a formal church wedding would not.

I would rather you wear a nicely engraved name tag than a polo. Maybe a thought.

Another thing that I strive for at weddings is being able to blend in. I don't want people to be able to pick me out that easily.

I had a groom once tell me he thought I left mid ceremony. He said he could see my assistant but couldn't find me.

That's pretty much what I was thinking. But since we are busy at our own events I don't see what other photogs are wearing very often.

Embroidery would be fine for corporate events or occasions in which you are shooting lots of people so they know who you are. I prefer to just leave cards next to the sign in book at weddings. If someone needs a photographer, they will ask for a card.

Side note. At my last wedding, it was a Sat, I picked up a job doing headshots and product shots for Sunday from one of the guests. Not bad making a few hundred unexpectedly and on a days notice.

Make sure what you wear is comfortable. You have to move around, jump on chairs and sit on the floor when needed. If you are not comfortable it will get in the way of taking photos that is not acceptable.

I had the same thought for my Co. and found that we could get some button up's embroidered as well... we now have polos, button up's and jackets (cuase you loose the branding if you cover it up in the cold). what we wear depends on the formality of the wedding or shoot.
