What about just a link to a random image or random profile.

These could be some more options:
Random Profile on the Site/Random Picture on the Site
Random Profile of someone logged in/Random Picture from someone logged in
Random Profile of someone who has left X amount of comments in Y amount of time/random picture...
Random Profile of someone participating in the current(or previous) challenge/random picture...
Random Profile of someone with at least X amount of favorites/random picture

To have an options bar with ideas like these, or some of these, like the one on the profile search. I don't think this would force people to do things. Like you don't create a website or upload a profile picture just because it is an option on the profile search. I don't think this would force it either. I just don't know how much coding/how long it would take. I would love to see it though.

That's a cool idea for a restriction. Maybe in conjunction with some of the others.

How about giving people who have written 500 words or more in critiques in the last week a boost as well? Something like that to promote critiquing.

The trouble with that is it's open to abuse. I could leave a critique on my own hidden photo (or an unknown photo by an old unknown photographer) saying:

word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word word

There, 500 words :)

Fortunately, that's not hard to detect, and it's a lot of trouble to go to just to get you in the queue. It's also easy to only count those that are not your own.

There's no foolproof method, of course, but it would still do better to promote critiquing than the status quo. And even if left unchecked, for each person who would cheat, there would be 5 or more that would critique more.

Take a look at PhotoSIG for example. They have a system which looks at critiques and decides whether or not to count the rating that goes with them. It's not foolproof, and I don't think people "like being forced", but in my experience it does promote more meaningful and longer critiques. On photopoints, you can get 20 critiques, and they will all say "Excellent work!" "I really like that". On Photosig, you will get more meaningful criticism (though you won't get many).

In this case, I am only talking about tying in some heuristic metrics into the featured queue.

Would it make sense to have this as a members-only feature? ...Another incentive to become a member.

If displaying profile pictures, those who don't have a profile pic could be weeded out as well.

I don't think the "Picture of the Day" or "Profile of the Day" is the greatest thing but, I really think that having a link to a random profile or random picture would be cool. As well as more options under you name in forum posting.

Make an entry box on the preferences page where the photographer can entry the Photo_ID number (like we do for displaying thumbs) of one (or more?) photos they'd like to be in the rotation pool.

That way it can be the photographer's choice whether to display their best, favorite, or most underrated photo. And while every member may not see every profile, surely a lot of members will see photos by people they don't know.

We could also exclude anyone who hasn't logged-in in the last six months or so, so the number might not be quite 20,000.

yes, mucky, would be nice to see this working again. I agree.

I also like the left bar photo of the day type thing. I think it could also be a nice way of introducing photographers, stir discussion, and expose prints available on dpcprints.

Great idea. How about giving those that are already in someone's favorites low or no priority. So the one's being displayed aren't favorites yet.

Or give priority to those that have one or fewer critiques.

Random is best I think, though maybe random using one photo per person as a criteria so it moves around and doesn't favor those with large portfolios.

i love this idea! since the pics are numbered, why not just have a random selection. Let's see it!
Oh & Jacko, do you really need anymore exposure! You're a superstar here!

This gives a random user a little exposure, and perhaps bring in some comments/critiques from the masses that have time to spend on the site. I know I like to see images from those obscure users that aren't high profile.

Great idea!! Did it die on the drawing board?

I know this is really old, but I found this and thought I'd bring it back up. It is a good idea. I know It wouldn't be too hard, critique club is randomized, I hope! lol.
