There are a lot of things that you could have done to improve this photo. I guess it depends on which software you are using. If you have Photoshop, there are so many things that I would suggest. Highlight/shadow feature using masks to independently control the dog and the background, levels or curves for color correction, sharpen the dog, and blur the backround a bit to put more emphasis on the dog. Also, I agree that you should not have cut the poor doggy's foot off.

I like it, you brought the white out nicely and brightened it better then the original when compared. The dogs eyes are blocked by the fur on his nose.

You did a nice job of lightening the dog slightly while keeping the BG under control. His cut off front paw is a minus IMHO. You've captured a nice friendly expression.

There isa lot going on in the BG which distracts somewhat from the dog. Maybe try to simplify the BG next time. Just my .02 ;)

This is the first time I've ever edited the colors of a photograph. How did I do? What do you suggest so I can improve?
