This all feels very familiar, and I think that's because of this previous thread:

//www.dpchallenge.com/forum.php?action=read&FORUM_THREAD_ID=12094

I posted a few informative links there regarding picture and poetry.com.

I got my letter last week, I forgot the name of the book they said it was going to be in, the letter went straight into the garbage.

Man, this sucks! I, too, got a letter saying all this great stuff about my photo. I was astonished bc I first took the picture for the book titles challenge here. It didnt do so well but I liked the pic. I felt so affrimed after getting it.

I'm glad I'm broke and was unable to get the book.
Dastardly thing to do. Oh, well. Does that mean I wont win the 10K?
I have, however, seen some winning pictures. Not sure how legit they are though.

Yes, I've gotten 2 invites. The first time, I did purchase the minimum package they had, which was still somewhere between $100 and $200. They sent me the books, and gave me access to a so-called professional webpage. The webpage looked good, but it actually did nothing.

The 2nd time, I let them take all my info, but when it came time to buy, I incrementally worked it down until I revealed I wasn't going to pay for anything. I wasted about 20 minutes of the caller's time before she abruptly hung up. I assumed from her parting comment, which I've forgetten, that I would not be in that issue.

So - - - It is all about sales, not recognition or "networking".

Sure, you don't have to buy. But they play on your vanity to get you to buy. That's the scam. And has anyone actually received the books? If not, it's not just an honest "scam", it criminal.

As a serious poet, surely you must know of real organizations of poets, non-commercial, where poems might be published in the equivalent of academic (referreed) journals?

Shannon, I think that you are wrong about only having pictures published if you buy the book. Truth is, I am a Published Poet, in several Anthologies, and never once bought a single anthology. If the publisher is the same as The International Library of Poetry, the work will appear whether u buy it or not. I was nominated for Poet of The Year 2000, and never submitted any work in the year 2000. I won an Editors Choice Award, for my first Poem, and didn't buy the book. I guess it all depends on who the publisher is....But my experience has been completely different when it comes to being published. U don't have to buy it, if they ask your permission to publish it, they publish it. Then you should be able to view your picture on their website just by using their search engine. www.Poetry.com/ If I am not mistaken the same people run photography contests, if thats whose doing the publishing, they have nothing to worry about. That's fantastic. Ours wasn't even that obvious, but it was really bad. It's still on the site. This wasn't even a test when we wrote it, it was just in response to their crummy database giving us error after error as we tried to find my daughter's friends poem. We kept getting data not available errors, so we thought they should change it to:

************************************
Website Data Missing
************************************

We are tempor-aril-y unable
To send this poem through your cable

Our server has been acting up
Just like a misbehavin' pup

If only we could make it work
We wouldn't feel like such a jerk

We hope to have it working when
You come back to visit us again

*******************************************

Now is that a masterpiece or what. ;-) If I can find it, I'll post one of their pathetic trick letters for money. I was tempted to pay to go to one of their conventions, to accept our award, just to get up in front of a bunch of losers and read that pathetic poem. But there probably isn't even such a meeting as they claim ;-)

Thats funny Konador,

I submitted one with many spelling and gramatical errors just for laughs. I too got a letter in the mail saying I was selected. WOW!

yes... i too had such an experience with a poetry contest saying that i was selected from the preliminary round.. The winner will get $1Million. They wrote in a letter that this poem will be published in their book and as an author, i could buy the book for a discount!

This idea really works because they are using "physcological interest" in their marketing! They do make great profits by this method...! *Just know that these is a wonderful example of SCAM...

All those who submitted a poem to the contest got the same letter! :))

I hope you at least reported them to the authorities. Your credit card company. Better Business Bureau, FCC maybe (because it's over the internet), whatever other fraud divisions there are.

seriously...is there any way to stop the site?

Sadly I've gotten the same letter myself.

That's good information. I am aware of such scams in other areas. I do laugh when I see someone who puts on their resume that they are listed in "Who's who". But I don't know for sure how fake that is.

On the other hand, I have hard evidence against Poetry.com. We had someone who said they were listed in their site and a book, so we went to visit the site. It wasn't working very well, so my daughter and I left them a little limerick, which was quite trite, but funny in that it criticized the site for not working.

We have won numerous accolades for that marvelous work of poetry (LOL). We have yet to attend one of their "conventions" to which we have been invited to pick read our masterpiece in front of the audience, though they have offered to do that for around $300 or $400. ROTFL - Pardon me while I get back on my chair....

So I've discovered the way to test the scams. Just upload a crummy picture. See if it too wins the recognition. As long as you know its bad, like our poem, you won't be fooled, and we will know it's a fraud.

LOL, thanks again everyone. It's been funny to see just how many people have received this letter in the past few weeks. Hopefully we'll get some more postings to get the message out and save people from wasting $70 U.S. on a book full of scams.

cheers again.
