I just have to mention - today's voters seem to be very nice! My score is benefiting from them and I've gotten several really helpful comments. So, while day one was tragic with the low votes and no comments, today has been completely delightful.
My score (biology) is pretty mediocre, now, which is fine, because I think it's a pretty mediocre entry (token discussion of my own score for the scores thread). |

Yanko, eyeware - all points well made. I concede that many entries in these categories are more closely related to the discipline and not necessarily to school per se.
I guess as a chemist by profession I just saw the chemistry entries in the challenge as obviously related to school and learning about chemistry. But I must remember that we all are coming from extremely different viewpoints.

These entries clearly show lab demonstrations that are the hallmark of Chemistry class -These are used in Chemistry/Physics demonstrations in schools all the time. |
I don't think eyewave's point was whether or not these things are used in schools but whether the photos themselves conveyed school in them. "Pens" are used in schools so would shooting a photo of just a pen with a white background convey "school" to you? |

Wow, even at this last phase of voting my score is teetering ...1 vote takes it up a tenth, then 4 votes later it drops a tenth. So it's been going all week. Well for us down South it's 10.25pm and just about bedtime. In the morning this will all be over. Hopefully will wake up in the top 20, but very much doubting it now :-( Good luck School Days Musicers...

My point (poorly made) was that the older 'School' challenges had a decent description that accompanied them. This gave those more leeway IMO when it came to viewer/voter perceptions of what met the challenge. With the current running 'School' challenges there isn't anything other than a challenge title - narrows it substantially in what many may consider 'acceptable' this time around.
Normally a challenge without a description would be more open (more like a free study). If the challenge title said 'Biology' with no description, it would be quite open. Add a description and it narrows. In this case, IMO, by not having a description, and by having 'School Days' preceed the subject in the challenge title, 'School Days' becomes a quantifier. A challenge description here could have opened it up by confusing everyone. :P
As for prior challenges having a bearing on voting, it really shouldn't (nor does it IMO). The bearing is more on the submitters to use any similar challenges that have run previously, as a guide to what the voters at that time were influenced by. |

I have found something similar with this week's challenge: the Biology entries show many many 'Strongly Connected to School/School Environment/Studying" shots, while the music images have far less of that genre... I suppose one is more naturally aligned with a learning environment than the other?

i'm willing to bet that if i had titled mine differently, the score would be a lot higher--that was my second mistake. |

I think too many of us forget that the majority of people who enter and vote on challenges do not patrol the forums 80 times a day. You are quite right in that there is no description saying "school days" wasn't part of the challenge. I'd probably have to go back to the last set of these challenges to find the posts.
That being said, I did enter a "school" shot. At least by title. It's doing quite well. I never underestimate DPC finickiness.

It was chemistry and geometry.
And while it was mentioned in the forums that it didn't necessarily have to deal with school, there was no challenge description, just the title. Many people do not read the forums so they just had the title to go on. |
was it a site admin or site council that posted?
they sure would make things easier if they posted those types of things in the challenge description... thanks!

That just depends....is the picture what the photographer remembers or interprets as schooldays or yours. I do not beleive that the challenge description states a specific requirement such as having a "school" or "music" setting. My memories of school and music have nothing to do with band. That's is just my take on this FWIW. |

am I missing something? when you click on the name of the challenge, no where does it say "school days" is just a part of a cute way to name it. seems to be that "school days" is a part of the challenge.
I guess thats one thing that always has mad me nuts about the challenges. This sort of loose interpretation of challenges, and how far away from the description of the challenge people go when taking a photo.
Well kudos to all that tried to meet the challenge as described, and low scores to those who didnt even try...
Finally, if the only reason your photo has anything to do with the challenge is because you gave it a title that meets that challenge, shame shame on you. |

I thought my Music score was going to top 6.0 but it hit some rough parts of the score this weekend and tumbled back to 5.7 area. We need to ritard this..
