I see this:

The title caught my attention first, the meager tonality, apparent intentional character and qualities of this portrait second. I don't know exactly why they work together, but I think they are seamed together appropriately.
In terms how I perceive the image - white shirt, tie unraveled, an enthusiastic gospel singer rested. It is a cut from Oral Roberts tent show circa 1957, or local Augusta, Georgia b&w Sunday morning show, w/gospel singers and ministers stepping in front each other to vie for the eye of the camera and b&w audience.

A line from an old Mason Profitt song came to mind.
"Did you ever hear the songs they play in Georgia......"

Here's one that didn't do too well, I think it pushed against peoples sentimentality. I think it was a great shot though and gave it an 8.

Special thanks to KarenNfld for including

in her list. I'm going to post some of my favorite shots that missed
snagging a ribbon. There were a lot of great shots this time.

You're new to DPC, right? :) You'll get used to your opinion not matching that of the "average" voter.

Well I think it is very nice but agree with a few that posted comments about the crop. A tighter crop would have made this shot MUCH more dynamic and probably higher scoring, even if it IS not a human portrait, methinks. The expression on the cat's face is very appealing.

I also liked this one a lot (and it did pretty well, but not in the top 10 as I would have expected):

I got that first and last one as well. But with the first I thought the make-up was too smudgy. Not neat enough.

My top scores that didn't make the top 10:

I voted a 10. Finished 11th place.
I voted a 9. Made 10th, but I thought it should have been higher.
I voted a 9. Finished 64th place. Love the use of negative space here.
I voted a 9. Finished 81st place.
A bit out-of-the-box, but I voted a 9. Finished 361st place.

And I was very happy to see one of my 9's go to a ribbon:

3rd place.
