I have no idea. Even worse, my wife appears to be the culprit so I have even less info. I confirmed that the card only goes in one way. Maybe there is just enough wiggle room that if you slammed it in there with sufficient torque or force you can tilt the card just enough to catch a pin.

Just a guess....it wouldn't fit the right way, wouldn't fit backwards, bit it did "fit" sideways?

maybe canon will convert to SD or some other more robust memory media in the future - CF media is, afterall, aging.

My 1DMKII uses both. So I can load one of each in it and select which one to record too. 2GB in each one will go a long way even with raw.

Lucky guy! of course, I haven't held such a camera before, not even in the stores :p

I drooled on one at a sporting event once..... lol

Good thing its weather sealed huh? LOL

And I was chastised on another forum for putting a firewire reader in my pc instead of using the USB card reader I have. People tell me I'm nuts but instances like what happened to the good doctor tells me I'm mostly not. At least about this!

Time for some new glass??

Haha, no. My wife knows there is more than just her standing between me and L-glass. 10 years of medical school, residency and fellowship taught me the principle of "delayed gratification". So while my next lens is likely to be the 180mm f/3.5 macro, it isn't likely to be within the next 6 months.

Plus the "value" of this card goes beyond material things. Wouldn't I feel dumb if I blew it on a trinket when it could come in real handy when I do something really dumb...

Around here "delayed gratification" is something that happens when I do something really dumb...

So, which one of you is sleeping on the couch?

Let's just consider it a "Get out of Jail Free" card I'm keeping in my pocket.

Actually I bet if you ask around, its more common to put your card in wrong and force it down, I broke my 300D this way, I put the card in when it was almost total darkness. I still havent fixed my cam though-

Oh I feel your pain! Glad it wasn't worse and you'll have it back soon.

Can someone look into their 5D and tell me if there is a missing pin on the bottom row in the middle? There is a missing pin on mine, but it also looks like the pin to the right of it is bent so as to fit the pin next to it. I think this is wrong, but want to make sure before I go bending new things.

Is there a missing pin on the bottom row of your 5D?
Does the pin to the left of it look somehow different than any of the other pins?

This is the worst news I've had in a long time.

I would check to see if the CF card is damaged, before you put it back in the fixed camera.

Ouch! That's gotta hurt!

I'd tell the wife she's getting new pins for xmas. :)

Well, it's sitting in the repair shop as we speak. The damage could have been, I guess, worse. About 7 days and $130. The replacement part is only $32. The rest is labor. If it happens again, I'll be tempted to put it in myself. None of this is under warranty because I got the camera through a barter deal and don't have any receipt to say when I got it. I knew that was the risk going into the deal and am still far ahead of the retail cost even with the $130.

So, I guess I get the challenge of taking pictures with my Canon S30 3.0MP P&S.

FWIW:

This is the lower 2/3 of the CF connector. There are no unused positions, and the pins are not offset.
