Achiral, I wanted to elaborate a little more on your picture and why I think it was a great idea. Around my area of the country the guys that use Skoal are just like the guys in your picture. They are flag wavers, basball cap wearers, and they could care less who they impress. The tobacco companies always show these model he men types that are pleasing to my eyes, not the guys that use the stuff. You targeted your audience well. I think I know what I'm talking about here. My husband, brother-in-law, and lots of our friends dip snuff. Shoot, I even tried it a time or two myself on a dare.

shiizaam, i thought your totem pole kicked butt!

i bet that for upside down, there will be some tricksters that take a pic of something that looks the same upsidedown as rightside up and then get mad. anyone want to take a bet ? : )

achiral, i think the main thing that would help your pic or any pic is the lighting. w/o getting nitpicky about the positioning of the people and stuff, the one thing that makes it not be 'pro' or whatever, is the lighting by on-camera flash. that just screams 'say cheese!'. if you really wanna flesh these out and make them pop, try what i said above. in fact, if i get a chance, i might try your pic idea. i could see it as a poster that would appeal to the skoal baseball crowd.

I like how the guy to the right has his cap on straight however, my only change would be the other guys finger and cap. It's not a bad photo. Like my totem pole last week, I heard 1/2 say it was great and DOP was killer and colors rocked and the other 1/2 was saying just the opposit. I even got one that just said... blah. One say...bad subject matter. I was like why doesn't a totem pole fit in the ground up ~shrug~ oh well, next week we'll forget the flag and totem pole and be on something else....something upside down :)

Here is one of the recent comments I received

5/6/2002 (2:39:48 PM) - blatent americanism, and lack of diversity, and what is wrong with your lack of personal restraint in mouthing off in the forums about how you picture is doing. if i were you i would be happy you live in the US because we would have you in jail here for being a complete waste of resources.[

Burn baby, burn!

(I'm really not at all pissed at anyone, and hokie thanks for the honest comments.)

achiral....I owe you an apology.

When I read you comment about the finger thingy I had missed your comment earlier that said thanks for the light idea.

That was my bad.

I spent about a half hour photoshopping your photo to see if any of my comments about lighting were easy to do within the scope of the rules becasue I didn't want to make a suggestion that was impossible for you to have done. In my hope to have helped I lost track of the comments and missed your reply.

Now...after eating enough crow.

The lighting changes I would have like to have seen were not able to be done within the scope of the Challenge Rules regarding layers. This is sorta my only beef with the rules because using layers is at the heart of photo correcting minor issues like lighting and depth of field in digital photography.

Anyway, I'm not here to create bad feelings. Just to learn something.

I could not agree with you more. Let's keep our eyes on the ball here. It's about learning to take better picturers, period.

I really enjoyed the last challenge and the diversity of the entries. But. it makes me very disheartened that some choose to go beyond the concept of the forum to make pointed, derogatory, and hurtful remarks about content.

"....And Justice for All", which placed 14th, received nine 1's, and eleven 2's, along with some hurtful remarks, that had nothing to do with the picture's quality! 1's and 2's ?!?!? Come on, now. Look at that picture!

Some of the remarks were almost hateful ie:
lisae - 4/29/2002
This is a very well executed photo, but makes me uneasy because of the manipulative, propagandistic subject
matter. To me it says "you're either with us, or you're with the terrorists"... ie. it embodies divisiveness and a
stance against peace. Maybe it is more pleasing to Americans than to the rest of us.

Daniel - 4/29/2002
I hate America.

Others were able to at least rate the merits of the photo, in spite of any feelings they may have had as to the subject.

cbonsall - 4/30/2002
Verging on cheesy patriotism but its a really nice pic so I'll let you off!!

And still others were kind enough to see the picture was built on the topic of the Challenge,"From the Ground Up"; for America (as the flag represents in the picture, I presume) has once again rebuilt , and resumed it's motion and activities, "from the ground up" after a devastating blow!

Speigner - 4/29/2002
Excellent composition and timing. A shot like this is hard to get, and you did a great job. Be prepared though,
people are going to slam this because of the subject matter, apparently many people confuse taking a
photograph with making a politcal statement. I'm giving high marks for it's quality.

This forum and it's challenges should be a-political, and the pictures submitted for scrutiny should be judged on their technical merit and set-up skills and be taken ,as they are presented, as an example of the photographer's interpretation of the theme, not a subversive or subliminal motive!

If subversive or subliminal messages were intended or effective, then I'd already be headed out to buy that bottle of Absolut and can of Skoal as per the current challenge!

Lighten up, people!

You are correct..you can berate others as you want. You can do whatever you want. And other's can do likewise...ain't America great!

Getting mad or frustrated in itself is not childish..I get mad as much as anybody else.

Getting mad over a comments made on a photo that gets critiqued on a site for photos to get critiqued on and then ripping on folks who are here to offer any small help they can is childish...no matter how old you are cronologically.

i use an index card to bounce my on-camera flash at an angle so the foreground isnt blown and the shadows arent all straight back, which is that characteristic flat flashed look.

i also would get a couple of strong lamps and sidelight the guys and the also light the flag. then i'd say 'stand real still' and i'd shoot it all at a slowish shutter speed.

Well, be that as it may, it's distracting.

Don't get all bent on a thread YOU start in order to berate others on honest comments..then get snide when folks take time out their day to download your photo and see if there is anything they might do that is HONEST to help rather than blow you off as a kid.

"'Here's the challenge: sell a product! Your job is to photograph a product and have it appeal to your audience: the users of DPChallenge."

I didn't major in marketing so I'm not worried about what a real ad company would do. I'm just trying to convince you guys to buy the product. :)

My friend achiral;
We all have opinions.
The three examples you gave....Do you know what their vote was?
No.
Take five and think about this. These are people you don't know, they don't know you. This is not personal. It's a photo.
Let this roll off your back.
You will never please us all and you'll go mad trying!

The flag is two sided and the wind was blowing. It wasn't hanging wrong it is just that from the perspective of the photo it is not what you normally see.
