I came across this over at tigerdirect.com while looking for image backup systems. I believe it was $54.99 plus s/h. I had a 2.5" 40GB 4200rpm (laptop hard drive laying around) in a small usb 2.0 enclosure that I used for data backup. I ordred this direct from tiger and it came in yesterday. Initally I was sceptical that it would do what I needed it to do which was simply back up images in the field and at home. I did not really want a image viewer so this seemed like it was going to work out well.

After reading the manual because of FAT32 limitations in Windows XP you can only have a 32gb partition. You can however have multiple partitions and different file formats ie FAT32 and NFTS. I did not want to loose the ability for data backups of system files ect. So I opted to run a 32GB FAT32 Partition and a 8GB NFTS system backup partition. It worked out perfectly.

The enclosure also has a 22 N 1 media card reader. Also a nice feature is when you insert your media type and hit the copy button it puts the images into a folder for the media type then the files each and every time. This means you can have multiple files with the same name it will not overwirte them as they are put into seperate folders everytime. Also as for power it comes with a built in rechargeable battery pack. While I do not know if they battries can ever be changed if for some reason they become dead. It would have just been nice to have the same AA rechargedable battries I already have a charger and carrier for. I may later attempt to see what type of battries it requries and modify them for AA or AAA.

I just though I would share what I had found about this product with some others. Here is a direct link to the Product on Hiro's product page.

pretty cool! I have a couple 2.5 drives laying around. This could come in handy when walking around Italy in a few months. You haven't had a problem losing images or corrupt ones yet?

Thanks 4 the info..

None at all....but I have only had it for days now. I will be using it over the weekend on a camping trip and see how it performs. See if moving around alot makes the hard drive skip and leave bad sectors and such. Not that I would drive over wash board roads to test that out but just walking and hiking ect.

Seems like a pretty good price especially if you have some 2.5 hard drives lying around.

Or if you don't have any 2.5" drives hanging around you can buy one made for this already:
