Is this happening with all lenses? I've experienced this a few times myself, in low-light (indoors) situations with the nikon 105mm f2.8 macro, but never with other lenses as I can remember. This lens also has trouble focusing sometimes on flat surfaces, mostly in low light situations.
Exuse my grammar/spelling, but english is not my native language and I have just had too many beers with my friends tonight :P
Anyways, I hope this might lead you closer to a conclusion :)
cheers,
jabo

just to try
can you set the D200 to AF only via the AF button
see if that works
(i actually prefer this over the shutter button)

I can't help you with this. My D70 focuses ok. However, if you ever need help after you scratch your sensor, let me know. I have experience there...

After I rinsed my D200 in the sink to get the ice cream off one time (yes I've done it several times, no it usually isn't a problem) I realized afterwards that I had left the battery compartment open and water had gotten inside. I let it dry a few hours but there was still moisture, and after letting it dry for about 24 hours it seemed perfectly fine. Once in a while for the next month however I experienced your very problem (except I have beeps turned off). Nowadays it has stopped though. |

You can do the same with exposure. It's easier for sure than pushing the little button and holding it down too.

The thing is, that this happens once in a while. so it can't be a menu thing. |

My D200 has focusing issues once in a while:
I'm in Single Focus Mode (S) and focus on a subject. beep beep, i hear. THen i decide to focus elsewhere, but the camera's focus light in the viewfinder stays lit and i cannot refocus (focusing is basically locked). Then I either keep trying until the camera decides to start focusing again, or simply turn the camera on/off to reset focusing capability.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Is there some setting that i don't know about? What's the deal?
