I usually use the layer mask method described above. But...

One other method I've used, where I didn't want to mess with my b&w conversion layer (not even with a mask), was to create a blank layer on top and set the mode to Colo. Then I use the clone tool, going back to the original layer (usually the background layer) and alt-click on something readily identifiable. Then activate the newly created Color layer and click in the same spot as where I alt-clicked on the background layer. Now I can "clone in" the color of the original and erase anything I don't like.

-Make a snapshot in history of the color version edited to your liking.
-Convert to b/w.
-In history go to the snapshot. Click on it.
-Paint back using the history brush.

Duplicate the layer. Convert to B/W. Either use the eraser to erase portions or create a layer mask and paint black onto the areas you want in color.

All you have to do really, is Layer, New Layer via Copy, then do your B&W conversion/desaturation on that layer, then use the eraser, zoom in, and erase back to reveal the background layer. Vary the softness & size of the brush and opacity. Then flatten image when you are done.

Are you talking about selective desaturation?

Does anybody know if we have a tutorial on how to (in CS2) remove the color from a photo and then brush stroke selected areas to reveal the color from the bottom layer? I hope I am explaining this right.
