Whatever you do, just don't make any promises you can't keep. Be realistic with your goals/expected outcomes.

Just play on what the kids actually want.

"I will give you LESS HOMEWORK!"

"I will give you better lunches!"

"I will ensure that the cheerleading team consists entirely of hotties!"

"I will legalize SLEEPING IN CLASS!"

"Free "A's" for everyone who votes for me!"

"New classes will start on useful things such as Forging Parents' Signatures, How to Make Hot Chicks Like You and Spelling for Dummies."

"I will change the Food Pyramid to include Hamburgers and BEER!" (assuming this is an american school)

I would guess that this is would be a pretty solid campaign platform for an 8th grade student in America.

Don't worry about filling all those promises. Someone is going to have to teach them the realities of politics sooner or later... Education IS one of your goals right?

Don't forget to have budget issues in the first week and ask for a 5 dollar donation from everyone in the school to enact the things you want and then resign...

"Megan. No slogans."

Or, if you like irony, "Megan. Action Not Slogans."

IT IS A POPULARITY CONTEST

Pretty good. By 8th grade you'd already gotten a handle on 90% of politics. ;)

Or perhaps an unpopularity contest -- the phrase "lesser of two evils" springs to mind whenever I free-associate the word "candidates."

The more you read and observe about this Politics thing, you got to admit that each party is worse than the other.

I just graduated high school. The kids who cared about specific issues, who promised reasonable things that we all wanted, and who truly wanted to bring positive change to the school never won. It always went to whoever was prettiest, richest, captain of this or that, most popular, etc. Last year our student council looked like an ad campaign for Stitches. And nothing was accomplished and there were a lot of disappointments where they let us down, but they've all been elected again for next year.

I hope you win. It shouldn't be that way.

Teddy Roosevelt scored with his punchy statement of his foreign policy approach: "Speak softly and carry a big stick." That is, of course, epigram-caliber language. Imagine if TR had left off the first three words! "Carry a big stick" would just be a bully talking. The introductory "speak softly" turns him into that strong, silent hero of Western fiction who doesn't pick fights, but dadburn it, if he sees you bullying a widow or orphan, get ready for a lickin'.

Megan, I suggest you talk to the students that would be voting for you, and see what changes THEY are interested in seeing in the school... pick the ones you think have merit and that you can accomplish, then build your platform from there.... find some REAL issues that the students care about, then they will vote for you...

Are you kidding me? Popularity is no more than %20....the rest is propaganda.

When i ran for president for 8th grade 2 years ago my posters had a picture of me pointing at the camera and it said "i want u to vote for me for student president" Then I Gave the most kick ass speech ever...I started out in a suit and startted stuttering my speech, said "screw this" tore off my suit and was wearing to reveal a shirt that said "vote shimm" (shimm is my last name), said that I wasent going to prommess anythig that i coudlent get like more money for school, and better lunches, and since i am a techie started to get some "rocky" music playing, and by the end, the entire school was on there feet. Then the other kid gave a lame ass speech, said he was going to get us a new principal, and won....because....no matter what you say, IT IS A POPULARITY CONTEST (and the kids boyfriend stole all the ballets and changed a bunch of them)
