They make 15-stop ND filters for sun photography. That will take you from 1/60th of a second to about 8 minutes. It would only take 2 to easily get to 8 hours.
It would also be pretty obvious that he uses film instead of digital so he could even be using some custom film with some ungodly low ISO.

Kind of a neat idea. The long exposure eliminates (mostly) the life from the scene. I would like to undestand how he does this. Is it with ND filters?

now many nd8 filters do you need to photography a new york street for 8 hours?
and, while we're on the subject of a really long time... who, besides maybe sting, makes love for more than 15 mins? seriously?

I have always wanted to try the long exposure of a busy place like Grand Central Station. I bet you could do it in much less than 8 hours. He's a bit of a glutton for punishment.
