I just noticed that the top three were over 7, 10th place was a 6.6, and there's upper 5 scores well past 70th place.

Polishes crystal ball... ;-)

Wow, not only did I finally break into the top 50%, I got 12th place overall! I didn't think my picture would score that highly since it didn't have anything besides the fireworks to add context.

Before I went shooting I read a LOT of tutorials and different links to websites on how to shoot fireworks. They all said to have a "good" foreground subject. Since I don't live in a big city I had the choice of two town firework displays. I picked the lake because I was hoping for at least reflection. Then I remembered they had built these new wharfs (I shouldn't have called it a dock.lol.), one on each side of the lake. The one I liked best was on the far side of the lake so I walked all the way around it with my family to get there.

There were NO obstructions which was great. The towns people don't really have big crowds at this display and the lake is so large that there is really no worry of having people on top of people. As you can see there was only about 18 people on the wharf so that was nice.

Anyway what I am trying to say is it pays to read tutorials and do research on how to shoot a certain thing. In this case it was my first try at fireworks and I knew I would only have a 15 minute display and time line to get it right. I read many different websites and looked at other images here and read their settings. It paid off, but one of the main things in all the research was that a foreground subject be in the shot. Whether it be water, a building, a dead tree, a city, etc. It makes all the difference. I also went early and chose my spot wisely which is another main point the websites spoke about. After that it was just watching out that there were no crowds that were going to tip your tripod over or walk in front of your camera and of course the tripod was a definate necessity to avoid squiggly lines. I didn't know how to set my camera to "infinity" though for focus, so I just went with it. Putting it on landscape didn't help and didn't allow me to use the longer shutter speed because I don't know how to do that when it isn't in manual. lol. So I had to wing it. What I did was focused on firework one and then locked it for the rest. Some were high and some were low so I got lucky that nearly all the shots came out nice. :) It was about as climactic as catching lightening. It was a very nice night and holiday. :)

Good observation - something to consider next time.

Guess that makes mine the winner of the fireworks-only shots

Congrats to everyone!!!

I'm happy with 6th. Would have liked fifth but I still got a little star. :) I like having a 5th though because it would be listed. :)

My B/W version

Daring to be different was scary, but it was worth the ride. :)

I'm certainly no threat to anyone, but it's not tooooo terrible for me, considering I only entered because it was a 24hr challenge that would be tiny tiny. I didn't even have any fireworks!! They went and changed it on me to 48, knew right then I was toast :)

Ah well, live and learn!

Goooood luck, all :D

I'm hoping to get into the top 50%, and I think I have a pretty good shot at it this time.

Mine is actually going up. Rather unusual.

Jeesh... these late voters are killing me. If this keeps up it will be .3 down. Waaa

this will end up to be my highest score.

I tend to agree. As of this writing I'm at:

Therefore, I predict the top 10 cut-off will be 6.391 :-p Just kidding. It's all about baby steps. At first, hope to get in the top 30, then the top 20, and then the top 10.

You never really know, though.. I've had a 6.55 take the blue, and a 7.07 that was only good enough for 15th place.

That is a good guess. I am hovering just a small notch below my highest score ever, even though i believe I have better photos. Funny how that works....

Welp, for this one I predict the top winners simply must be in the high 7's. I'm not there so I still hope for top 10. I still love my entry so that is always a win win situation. :) That is incredible though to get a 7.07 like you did and be 15th. WOW! Bummer!
