Detroit here. . .We got our power back last night around 9 - internet just kicked in at 9:15 Saturday morning.
Freaky.

I live up in northern ontario and we were out of power for 18.5 hours
My bf and I and our neighbors had a huge pajama party and sat outside and drank and played cards at night. We sat on the lawn during the day and drank and played trivial pursuit. We lost power at 4pm and didn't get it back til like 11:30 yesterday morning. Hasn't even been 24 hours yet. Looking back on the whole thing it was pretty fun to sit around in the dark and play games |

I was quite lucky with power out for just 5 hours. Some people in Manhattan have had power out for over 24 hours! One source (a relative) in NYPD said that they are HOPING to have all 5 boros back to normal by Monday. Subways are STILL not running and they say it will take 8 hours even after all power is restored.
Most of Rockland County seems pretty normal. My bank didn't have complete computer systems this morning but they were open for business and got everything done that I needed done. I am at the Suffern end of the county and travelled as far as Nanuet. All traffic lights are working now. The trains into the city didn't run today giving me a day off. They say they will be running normally by Monday.
Losing your air conditioning is a minor inconvenience. Yes it's pretty hot right now. But I'd rather lose my a/c in the summer than my heat in the winter. All a matter of keeping things in perspective. I'm also glad that I don't own a deli or a restuarant or convenience store and have to throw out food that has spoiled. That's got to be a ton of money these people are losing. And, some insurance policies won't cover these loses when they are due to power failures.
At least there was only one death caused by all of this. That was someone who had a heart attack after walking down 24 flights of stairs.
As far as the extent of the blackout, our newspapers say that it went from Michigan to New Hampshire and from Canada through New Jersey. Maine and Vermont weren't hit from what I've heard. All who were blacked out share a power grid and something took the whole thing down in just about five seconds. Scary, isn't it!

I used to live in Nyack. I heard that the outage had hit Manhatten but had no idea it was that widespread. Not the best time of year to lose your air conditioning!

Here is Toronto, we lost power at a little after 4:00 PM yesterday, it returned to some parts early this morning. They hope to get 50% of the city powered by tonight and about 2/3 of the province. They have mandated rolling blackouts for the rest of the weekend as they attempt to restart the grid. As well, Ontario is reported to be disconnecting from the US states in order to recover. Apparently they are have major surges and spikes upon start-up and it is causing additional cascading failures reaching further out west in both Canada and the USA.
I purchase a generator this morning. It was not easy. The stores were all closed and one kindly opened for me for 15 minutes to help me. Then they closed for the day. Besides, I bought the last one - a nice red Honda 3000 watt inverter model (so I can run the computers).
Next, was to get gas for the car, fill the gas can, and fuel the new generator in the back of the SUV, it took over two hours patiently in line at the service station. Tempers are flaring for some, but most folks are pretty civilized and very courteous to one another.
The neighbourhood was a sight to see last night as no one could watch TV. So, as we walked the dogs as we do every night, hundreds of neighbours were outside talking, walking, and enjoying the evening. A truly amazing event.
The stars were seen by everyone too. Not movie stars, the real ones up in the sky. Living in a major city, it is rare to view stars as the ambient light obliterates the night sky. But, not last night. It was wonderfully spectacular.
Well, I hope all are well. Now I must try to purchase batteries and portable lighting for tonight. The Province has called a State of Emergency, so there is not suppose to be any travel, but I just can not go to bed at 8 o'clock again, I need my DPC.
Simply incredible - just like in 1965!

I am on the very west most tip of the power outage. Our power went down down around 4:30 pm and was back on sometime before 6am.
I got a couple of shots of me sitting on my porch by candle light but am not sure how to post them here... |

i'm sure no one can upload them yet, but i would absolutely love to see it too.
i know this was kind of a "crisis," but compared to everything else we've all gone through the last few years this is relatively harmless. RELATIVELY.
we're just a few hours south of detroit and west of cleveland, but we're on the midwest grid so we're not affected. still, it's just amazing to me how widespread this is. i've got a brother in boston, but i've not been able to get a hold of him as of yet. i'm sure he's taking lots of shots and although he's not on this site i could try and get some later and post them.
just shows you how fragile all of this "technology" really is.

Thanks for the updates. I finally got in touch with my brother - just NOW (around 6 AM, EST). Still no power - this is already the 14th hour. I hope it's not what we all fear it could be. Take care y'all.

My sister lives at home in upstate NY, about 11 miles from the Canadian border and she was online with her laptop and dialup connection.
She recently switched to a cable connection but still had the dialup. With the cable connection as you know she could not get on the internet with out power to the cable modem (No UPS).
We talked for a short while until her laptop battery was getting low.
With the heat wave she was not looking forward to trying to sleep without the fans or A/C.
For everyones sake I hope they get it fixed soon :)

A friend from NY came online a couple hours ago, so I'm sure everyone over there will wake up to not only the sunshine, but precious artificial light ;)

With the blackout and the MS worm. Reminds us to save our work often and backup your files. You never know. Hours of work or the perfect shot can be lost.

acording to the theater websites manhatan is still out. and the bronx is back on...I know this isn't that much of a help to you. also land lines are overloaded still but working cell lines are for the most part not.

Does anybody from NYC have an update??? I kept on contacting my brother (who's on Sullivan St of Spring St station) but no answer. Is the power back on?
I understand that there's limited distribution, and parts of NYC are still in the dark. Am I correct? I'm trying to make something up for my Mom in the Philippines who's a worry wart... and I couln't personally tell this to her as I am in Hong Kong.

I live in central Connecticut. I am a computer geek(nerd) at heart and have an uninteruptable power supply(ups) for my computer. It's a battery backup thing. So when the power went out I didn't know right away. My computer will stay on for about 45 minutes on the batteries. the ups beeps when the power goes out. That is what clued me in.
